ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
When you think of Artificial Intelligence (AI), what thoughts spring to mind? For me, I imagine Ava, a humanoid robot like the one in Ex Machina, where a programmer is performing the Turing test on her. Passing the test involves an inability to distinguish any difference between artificial and human intelligence. What do you think, or feel, about that? Progress in science, computing power and AI is important, but at what cost? The pros of advancing technology in society surely must outweigh the cons, if not, disaster may be the result. Elon Musk, having relatively high levels of human intelligence, said: “Lack of AI oversight is insane, and more dangerous than nukes”. His recent accomplishment was successfully launching two NASA astronauts into space aboard Falcon 9. A commercial collaboration between SpaceX, founded by Musk, and NASA. The rocket was designed and built by SpaceX. So, humans led, created and executed this impressive mission. Do we really need AI and is it worth the risks?

It appears that the risks of AI causing any imminent human danger is quite low. According to Richard Socher, Chief Scientist of Salesforce, current research and advances in AI are in its infancy. Like the joining of forces and resources of NASA and SpaceX, in preparing for the future, do you foresee a beneficial collaboration between AI and Human intelligence? Satya Nadella, the current CEO of Microsoft seems to think so: “I definitely fall into the camp of thinking of AI as augmenting human capability and capacity.” This opinion highlights a benefit to humans but will it be mutual? Will advanced AI benefit and could this be a problem? It’s likely too early to say with any confidence.

Did you take the test? it’s all good if you didn’t, we’re not here to judge. Or are we? Human intelligence comes in many forms and getting assigned a seemingly arbitrary number, associated with your level of intelligence, is limiting and somewhat judgemental. For example, if you’re not in the 98th percentile or higher with respect to your IQ number you won’t be accepted into Mensa International High IQ Society. For some, this may be a dent to their ego, others perhaps just don’t care. There’s no right or wrong. If being in an exclusive high IQ society is your thing — great! Knock yourself out. If not — cool beans. One benefit of measuring IQ is it serves as self-awareness, although how valuable is this to you or your community? There are other thresholds of human intelligence.

As a sentient human being, it’s my opinion that EQ is more important than IQ because of its benefits to my community. A civilised society with increased empathy amongst its inhabitants will surely improve harmony. Communities around the globe that value collaboration above division and empathy over computational ability will thrive. If the current state of the world is anything to go by we still have so much work to do. If AI, IQ and EQ combine forces I’m sure we’ll start seeing more harmony in this world.
