There’s an old proverb I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

At Fair, we’ve certainly been moving quickly. But it’s how far we’ve come thanks to our amazing dealer partners that has made the past year so amazing.

Back in the summer of 2016, a few dozen of us gathered in a tiny, standing-room only office. Our mission: the first clean-sheet redesign of how people get cars since the advent of leasing. The only rule was that whatever we came up with had to be radically better for everyone. Consumers, dealers, OEMs — everyone.

It was a daunting task, but we started to figure things out — slowly at first and then faster as we gained traction.

We wanted to eliminate the stacks of paperwork involved in the existing sales process, and to free people from rigid contracts. We were obsessed with finding a way to shrink a car transaction from hours to minutes. Every problem we fixed got us closer to our goal. And helping us at every stage were the enthusiastic car dealers who helped us solve countless industry pain points.

Before we were even a thing, dealers gave us feedback on drafts of our contract, shared tips on how to properly register cars, and even offered advice on how to save time in our checkout process. They invited us to visit their stores, signed on to our platform, and spread the word about how Fair has helped them grow their pre-owned business.

In short, we built Fair together.

A lot of tech companies like to boast about disruption and “shaking things up.” But disruption implies there are winners and losers, and that things will be broken in the process. That never sat well with us. Instead, we set out to create a solution that’s truly fair for everyone — inside and outside the industry, consumers and retailers alike.

As we open 2019 with tens of thousands of successful transactions on the books, we extend a heartfelt thanks to all of our dealer friends for helping us build a new way forward for pre-owned sales — and for the miles we have ahead.
