The Future of $15

Washington, California, and New York are all states that offer their hard working, minimum wage workers $15 an hour. Massachusetts is only required to pay their employees $11 an hour. Does that seem fair to you? Why is Massachusetts lagging in the trend to raise the minimum wage? Well, large companies are hesitant to increase their wages because for every $1 dollar put in their employees pocket costs $1.5 million dollars out of the company’s. People believe that an increase in the minimum wage will cause major corporations to flee from the country or the state. What organizations are failing to see is that without an increase in workers’ hourly pay, there is less money cycled back into the economy. 3.3 million Americans currently live on a minimum wage salary. That is also 3.3 million consumers that won’t have enough money to purchase products made by large companies and local businesses. The Boston Globe even reported that when “low-wage workers and their families spend their wage[s] [it] increases.. the local economy, and that economic activity helps business maintain existing jobs and add new ones.”

Massachusetts has not completely ignored the initiative for a $15 minimum wage. Boston Mayor, Martin Walsh, is a big supporter of eliminating income inequality and feels it is important to work on the issue. Senate President, Stanley Rosenberg, says that “Massachusetts will ‘absolutely’ see a $15 minimum wage law, or at least a statewide vote on it.” The idea of Massachusetts residents and businesses benefiting off the wage increase is not to be ignored. The Boston Globe reported that, “since the last minimum wage bill was passed in June 2014, the Massachusetts economy has added more than 150,000 jobs, and unemployment is at its lowest rate since before the Great Recession.” When the economy is benefitting along with employees, people are happy. Imagine what a higher wage in 2017 could do for Massachusetts.
