Slaves and Beggars

Since when have men become enslaved to freedom, turning away from truth to embrace trash?

Since when did they replace love with lust and purpose with cash?

Belief in one Savior God has been roundly traded for any idol’s open bed.

Beliefs long held — given up for an entangling world wide web, full of ideas valuing emptiness instead.

We beggars watch you from the fringes aghast at your fright when you choose darker passages and turn off the lights,

and then wonder at the painful falls endured in darkest dungeons, or in the shadowy chambers of cowardly compromise.

We beggars would share the light shining upon us as we seize His bread.

We have been filled there at our Lord’s Door, the brighter Door separate from all-enveloping worldly culture with its overwhelming despair.

But you became slaves of freedom’s wealth and would not wait, nor observe, nor seek for yourselves.

You could not,

or would not comprehend.

Perhaps it is our dirty beggar hands…

Since you have chosen in such way to live free,

at least wear your shackles proudly.

Recognize them, and for what they have in store.

We beggars proudly wear His shackles, yet live richly at His Door.
