A Short and Simple Proof Against God?

Fellow Medium writer Tony Berard posted a short article on Medium back in March that declared he could disprove God easily and succinctly. The title of his piece was: “A Short and Simple Proof Against God.”

You can read the full piece here. The entire tone of the piece — from the title to the end — conveys a dismissive and smug tone that is neither justified nor helpful.

Mr. Berard is arguing against the Kalam Cosmological Argument, which is a modern formulation of one of the classic arguments for God’s existence. To summarize, the Kalam Cosmological Argument (KCA) essentially goes like this:

  1. Everything that begins to exist has a cause. (This is based on causality, the idea that events have causes.)
  2. The universe began to exist. (This relies on evidence for the Big Bang.)
  3. Therefore, the universe has a cause. (This cause, according to the argument, is God — or at least some form of Higher Power.)

The gist of Mr. Berard’s refutation of the KCA (which again can be read in full here) is that Christians claim God is “immutable” or “unchanging” and therefore…
