One of the Worst Arguments Against Christianity
…and that’s saying something (especially on Medium)
The Internet is full of people who denounce Christians and the Bible. It’s impossible to keep up with all the criticism, most of which is frankly ridiculous. But there’s one argument that rears its ugly head now and then, and it’s got to be one of the worst anti-Christian arguments out there.
It goes something like this…
You’re only a Christian because you were raised that way, therefore…
Actually, the “therefore” isn’t really well thought out (on their part). It essentially lands somewhere in the postmodernist neighborhood of truth being relative. This is somehow supposed to represent a killing blow to the credibility of Christianity.
Somehow.
But here’s a dose of reality for anyone who thinks this argument should be taken seriously…
The “you only believe that because of how you were raised” argument is not only flawed — it’s self-defeating.
If cultural conditioning invalidates belief, then all beliefs — including the belief that Christianity is false — get tossed out.
