Let’s get writing

We’ve just said goodbye to 2021 and hello to 2022. Let’s start the year by writing a piece on how your family handles life when someone has special needs. Maybe your family includes someone with Down’s syndrome or another genetic problem. Perhaps someone in your family has a physical disability.

Is your special needs you, a spouse or a child? We want to read about your situation and how you cope with social situations, schooling, family life in general. What are your daily challenges and what are the ways you adapt?

There is no right or wrong answer to this prompt. As long as it’s your truth, that’s what matters. Family Matters is always a safe place to share your perspectives on family and parenting.

Rules:

· Your piece needs to be a minimum of 800 words.

· Poetry is not accepted.

· It must be written for the reader. Pieces that are written in the style of a diary entry generally do not give anything to the reader. Think about what message you want to get across. How do you want the reader to feel after they have finished your piece? Is there anything you want them to learn or look at differently?

· Tag your work with “prompt”

· Your work has to be related to family and/or parenting. Please tag your work with one or both of these.

· If you would like to enter this challenge but are not a writer for Family Matters, please email an unpublished Medium draft of your entry to familymatterspublication@gmail.com with “January 2022 Prompt” as the subject.

· If you are currently a writer for Family Matters, submit your piece as you would with any other submission.

· Follow Medium’s Curation Guidelines

· Please read our Submission Guidelines and FAQs for more information.

We are excited to read your entries.

Good luck!
