Awesome book. Deeply researched. Deeply personal and touching. Well written and to the point.

Jessica Grose, the parenting editor and columnist from the New York Times, pulls no punches.

I think it’s especially important for people to understand the history of American motherhood. If you don’t know where the current pressures and beliefs come from then it’s harder to see how crazy and unfair many of them are.

Grose reviews that history and then takes the reader on a tour of some of the difficult challenges mothers face today. With chapters on pregnancy, identity, work, social media, and the Covid catastrophe, she weaves concrete data and the personal stories of everyday moms.

Finally, she ends with ideas on how we can support each other as we try to build a better system for ourselves and our children. Read and share!
