09.19 Problem Space Definition

To wrap up our research synthesis and prepare for our design territory presentation to Philips on Wednesday, we worked on rewriting some of our “how might we” questions and design principles to focus more specifically on our audience of families with sleep disorders.

Audience

  • Undiagnosed sleep disorders
  • Solving/treating nighttime disruptions related to sleep disorders

How Might We…

  • Improve the sleep quality of patients and family members with sleeping disorders?
  • Help people be aware of their own sleep patterns and those of the people they live with?
  • Collect data, both quantitative and qualitative, that would aid in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in a way that is intuitive and not disruptive?
  • Shorten or reduce the stress caused by nighttime health disruptions.
  • Leverage the intuitiveness of the physical world along with the richness of the digital world?

Design Principles

  • Holistic approach: Keep in mind the 24/7 nature of how sleep affects our waking life and vice versa
  • Design for failure: Work even when technology fails (fail gracefully, have backups)
  • Calm technology: Be intuitive and not disruptive (be useful and usable even/especially when sleepy)
  • Designing for different levels of attention and hierarchies of information. (urgency, appropriateness of information)

We also have talked a lot about the technology we might use, since the open-endedness of this class and the project allow for exploration in future-facing technologies. We’re interested in merging the physical and digital worlds through tangible interactions and augmenting objects with digital information beyond what they can innately provide. We are still trying to figure out the link between these technologies and the needs we’re solving for.
