Scene Six — “Help Needed”
The sanctuary was dimly lit by the candles that surrounded the ornate altar at a distance. And they were almost burned out. The sanctuary smelled faintly of incense and candle wax. The priest sighed and turned to his dutiful assistants, sitting in the pew next to him.
“We need more food and medicine,” Gareth said in a tired voice. “These people have already gone through so much. We must give them as much comfort as we can.”
Titus offered, “I can go into town and ask around. Maybe someone can spare some blankets or even some old clothes.”
Gareth nodded.
Ambrose, Gareth’s other assistant, piped up. “I can ride for the castle. Maybe our lord can — “
Gareth shook his head. “Too dangerous.”
Ambrose was near the same age as Titus. He had blonde hair and green eyes; however, while he sat in the pew he looked small and frail. He was draped in his monk’s robes. But his enthusiasm more than made up for his small stature.
