Scene Seven — “The Bishop”
Gareth moved slowly, tiredly stepping through the small village, past broken-down houses and empty lots dotted with patches of weeds that seemed to offer symbols of despair.
A few stars twinkled through a low-lying fog that rolled across the landscape like an old blanket, but Gareth did not take notice of them as he grabbed hold of a fence post for support and kept walking forward until he made it to the local tavern.
He felt helpless and alone as he approached the large oak door of the tavern. He heard the loud laughter and music but none of it reached his soul.
Gareth pushed through the door and was immediately hit with a wave of heat as well as an array of smells from food being cooked over an open fire in one corner of the tavern. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, yet Gareth still felt isolated amidst the revelry.
The bartender eyed the priest warily as he stepped up to the tavern bar. “You look like you need something heavier than the usual?”
