Buy Low Sell High Weekly Challenge

This isn’t your typical Buy Low/Sell High column. Here at the Fantasy Life App Blog we take fantasy football to another level because as our name suggests — this isn’t a game, this is real life! Well, it is a game, but we take it way too seriously and keeping with that theme I will be taking this column way too seriously by making it my mission to either buy or sell at least one of my six featured players each week.

Last week’s challenge was to either buy low on TY Hilton, LeSean McCoy and Jimmy Graham or sell high on Matt Forte, Jordan Matthews and Derek Carr.

After failing to complete my challenge for the first time all season, I made an extra effort to go above and beyond with completing my challenge this week. I completed two separate trades with players from last week’s column. I traded away Forte straight up for Mark Ingram. I didn’t love this trade, but I do prefer Ingram over Forte for the rest of the season and I was unable to find a better deal. The more intriguing deal occurred in the 20 team Fantasy Life OG League that I’m in with my podcast co-hosts Jeremy and Mike, along with fellow early beta testers of the Fantasy Life App.

Eight teams make the playoffs each season and I was firmly planted in sixth place. Not high enough to feel like a lock for the playoffs, but enough to take a few risks to create the best possible playoff team. I bought low on LeSean McCoy by trading for him and Brandon LaFell in exchange for Jonathan Stewart and Jordan Matthews. If McCoy can come back after the bye next week looking healthy then it should be a good trade for me. Only time will tell.

Now let’s get to this week’s players that I will challenge myself to either buy low or sell high this week.

Buy Low

Le’Veon Bell

Bell will be tough to buy low on considering he has only had one bad week, but this might be the best possible time to try and snag him away. Although he only had 32 rushing yards on 14 carries he was still able to accumulate another 38 yards on six catches. That’s not the stat line that Bell owners have grown accustomed to and now might be the perfect opportunity to trade for the best running back in fantasy football.

Dez Bryant

Cleveland made a point to stop Bryant on Sunday and that’s about the only thing that worked for the Browns. Sure, they were able to hold Dez to only one catch for 19 yards, but this created many opportunities for other pass catchers, primarily Jason Witten, to reap the rewards. Game flow also kept Bryant out of the picture as the Cowboys cruised to an easy 35–10 victory. I expect Bryant to be a top ten receiver the rest of the way and will gladly trade for him this week.

DeAndre Hopkins

Nuk has not been anywhere close to the receiver you thought you were getting when you drafted him in the first round. There are a number of reasons we’ve seen his numbers dip. Brock Osweiller is clearly not the quarterback the Texans we’re looking for. Houston would have been better of re-signing Brian Hoyer as a transition QB, while drafting a young prospect. Alas, there is light at the end of the tunnel! Hopkins’ schedule gets significantly easier in the second half of the season (@Jax/@Oak/SD/@GB/@Ind/Jax/Cin/@Ten) and despite his poor performances, it’s clear that he is still one of the most talented receivers in the NFL. If you own Nuk I would advise you to stay the course and if not, go out an buy low!

Sell High

Mark Ingram / Tim Hightower

We’re going to start things off with a double dose of Saints’ running backs. Ingram and Hightower were fortunate enough to face the 49ers defense on Sunday and they both reaped the rewards. I believe that Ingram will eventually retake the reigns as the No. 1 back in New Orleans, but Hightower has done more than enough to warrant a significant number of touches moving forward. They will both be fantasy assets, but I don’t trust either of them to have consistent performances like we saw against San Francisco.

Davante Adams

Adams has seen this list before, but now seems like the most opportune time as any to sell high on the Packers receiver. He didn’t have a great game on Sunday against the Colts despite a good match up and was bailed out by a late touchdown. The previous two weeks of top performances were due mostly to volume and with Randall Cobb and James Starks returning from injury I don’t expect the number of targets that Adams has seen to continue throughout the season. I view Adams as a WR3 moving forward and would try to trade him for WR2 value.

Latavius Murray

20 carries for 114 yards and three touchdowns against the Broncos defense?!?! Here we have yet another player in the sell high section based on an unrepeatable performance. I don’t expect Murray to score this many points in another game this season and if you can convince another owner that he is a top five running back after dominating the Denver defense then I would sell him in a heartbeat. Although Murray clearly looks to be a RB1 for the rest of the season, there is still enough risk with competing backs that I would be looking to sell before it’s too late. This could be the case of a great offensive line making a mediocre running back seem better than is actually true.

That’s it for this week’s challenge. Make sure to stop by next week to find out if I’m able to trade away or for any of these players and listen to the Fantasy Life OG Podcast.
