Buy Low Sell High Weekly Challenge

This isn’t your typical Buy Low/Sell High column. Here at the Fantasy Life App Blog we take fantasy football to another level because as our name suggests — this isn’t a game, this is real life! Well, it is a game, but we take it way too seriously and keeping with that theme I will be taking this column way too seriously by making it my mission to either buy or sell at least one of my six featured players each week.

Last week’s challenge was to either buy low on Spencer Ware, Brandon Marshall and Dion Lewis or sell high on Ryan Mathews, Willie Snead and Michael Floyd.

For the second time all season I have failed to complete my challenge. I made a few trades in my leagues, but not involving the players I highlighted last week. An interesting problem I ran into this past week were owners unwilling to trade because their teams were no longer in playoff contention. I imagine that many of you have faced this problem before and will face it again this week, in what is most likely the last week before your trade deadline (as a result of that deadline, this will be my last column of the season). The idea that a team should sit out from trading because they have been eliminated from the playoffs is not only ludicrous to me, but it is disrespectful and unfair to the rest of the league.

Choosing not to make a trade that makes your team better is technically choosing to weaken your team. This gives an unfair advantage to the owners you are facing later in the season, compared to the teams you faced in the first half of the season when you were always trying your best to win each week. It’s not complicated. A good fantasy owner should do their best, each and every week, to field the best possible team.

Now, to this week’s players I am trying to buy low and sell high.

Buy Low

Greg Olsen

In a tasty match up against the New Orleans Saints, Olsen was only able to muster a measly four catches for 33 yards. The previous week against the Chiefs wasn’t much better with only five catches for 39 yards. The entire Panthers team has struggled this season, but I’m still confident in Olsen’s abilities to turn things around closer to what we saw from him in the first half of the season. Olsen also has a great playoff schedule with games at home against San Diego and Atlanta, and on the road at Washington.

Michael Crabtree

Three catches for five yards is not great. Crabtree owners should feel plenty frustrated with his performance against the Texans on Monday Night Football and the poor showing against the Broncos before that, but better days are ahead. He has proven to be a player that Derek Carr looks for in the red zone and with games against Chiefs, Chargers and Colts during the fantasy playoffs should pay off for those willing to take the risk of buying low.

Jeremy Hill

Hill doesn’t fit your typical “buy low” candidate as the odds are that many people will inflate his value now that Giovanni Bernard is out for the season. I still included him on this list because I think he is worth trying to trade for in case his current owner isn’t as sold given the fact that he didn’t have a great game against the Bills. I believe that the Bengals will integrate Hill into the passing game more as Andy Dalton will need to redistribute not just Bernard’s targets, but also AJ Green’s. On top of all that, they have a great playoff schedule against Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Houston.

Sell High

Todd Gurley

I can’t express how much it hurts my heart to include Gurley on this list. I was all in on Gurley as soon as he was drafted by the Rams because of his immense talent he showcased as a Georgia Bulldog. I still believe in his talent. I don’t believe in the Los Angeles Rams. Gurley was lucky to score a touchdown this week, but failed yet again to break 100 rushing yards. Use this mediocre game, along with the upcoming match-up against the Saints as ammunition to sell high on Gurley.

Allen Robinson

Robinson pulls off a rare feat by now being featured this season as both a buy low and a sell high. Earlier in the season, I suggested buying low on Robinson and now he has gone three consecutive weeks with a touchdown. This most recent week wasn’t as great as the previous weeks as he only managed to snag three balls for 18 yards, but the touchdown saved the day. With upcoming games against Denver and Minnesota, I am concerned about this touchdown streak continuing and will be selling high.

Rashad Jennings

Jennings had his best game of the season against the Bears, racking up over 100 yards of total offense and a touchdown. This performance in on the heels of what had been his best performance of the season last week against the Bengals. Things are definitely looking up for Jennings with another great match up against the Browns this week. In a perfect world, you would wait to trade Jennings after this week, but if your trade deadline is this week, I would get out on Jennings while you can. I am a believer in Paul Perkins talent and expect him to eat into Jennings work.

That’s it for this week’s challenge and for the season! Feel free to contact me on the Fantasy Life App or Twitter if you have any questions. Make sure to stop by next week to find out if I’m able to trade away or for any of these players and listen to the Fantasy Life OG Podcast.
