MathBox don’t give a F*** — Fantasy Football Start/Sit Advice for Week 8 based on Machine Learning

Fantasy Outliers’ takes on Week 8 Studs and Duds, Streamers and Busts, Minuses and Plus — Machine learning projections in PPR and Standard scoring leagues

To dig into our raw, unadjusted projections for Week 8 through the remainder of the 2018 NFL season, go to our Wonderful Weekly Google Sheet.

Just like the infamous honey badger, our models don’t give a f. MathBox, how we affectionately refer to our machine learning models, is built from the ground up. While it may not have the most up-to-date week-to-week situation changes, it is not afraid to make bold calls.

  • Cam Newton going against Baltimore, the 2nd toughest matchup for QBs so far this year? No problem. #1 QB.
  • Michael Thomas going up for balls against Minnesota, the 5th toughest matchup for wideouts? No problem. 20 pts.
  • George Kittle? 15 points in PPR.
  • Los Angeles Rams going against Canton-bound Aaron Rodgers? Top defense this week.

MathBox’s bold calls may seem odd, even off-putting at times, but it has had some success. Proceed with caution and combine these projections with your fantasy football know-how to make the best decisions for your team...

Quarterback Rankings

  • Cam Newton is our highest rated quarterback, even against the Ravens. He presents a unique challenge to defenses, and maybe he will make up for passing toughness with some rushing yards. I’m a little skeptical that he’ll be #1 this week, but could see him going above ESPN’s 16 points.
  • Baker Mayfield! Cheers Cleveland, your finally made it into the top 5 in something other than most losses. Against Sh*tsburgh, let’s hope he gets every one of those projected points!
  • Speaking of the devil, Ben Roethlisberger is MathBox’s #2 QB this week. A great value play.
  • MathBox is low in Patrick Mahomes and Andrew Luck, but who cares, you’re starting them.
  • A good streaming option could be Alex Smith at 51% ownership in ESPN leagues with a good matchup against the Giants.

Running Back — Rankings in Standard and PPR

  • Kamara will likely not get the 30 he is projected for. MathBox may be confused with the recent return of Ingram. That said, if it calls Kamara-Ingram balance, I will be impressed.
  • Tarik Cohen is at +5 versus ESPN against the Jets and could be a good DFS value play.
  • Kerryon Johnson at 15 points is +5 versus ESPN. Only 80% ownership in ESPN PPR leagues — worth a look on the waiver wire.

Wide Receiver —Rankings in Standard and PPR

  • Will Juju beat out AB this week? Nah. MathBox what are you thinking? That’s just wrong.
  • MathBox also has Diggs ahead of Thielen, which I don’t buy at all since it was saying the same thing last week.
  • MathBox has been high on Demaryius Thomas all year. This could be his week, going against high-flying KC.
  • Some other value plays include: Sterling Shepard, Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman, Chris Godwin, Tyler Boyd

Tight End — Rankings in Standard and PPR

  • George Kittle is the man. Apparently, MathBox doesn’t care that he’s going against Arizona’s 3rd ranked defense against tight ends. Start ‘em.
  • MathBox is high on both Cameron Brate and OJ Howard going against the Bengals soft play against tight ends. Maybe it’s confused, but I could see it.

Defense/Special Teams Rankings

  • Kansas City who’s been terrible could be a streaming option this week if you’re desperate — projected at 7.4 points against Denver.
  • Arizona, who is owned in 63% of leagues, is MathBox’s #2 defense this week. Worth a look as a streamer if they’re still available.

Kicker Rankings

  • Dustin Hopkins Wsh and Brandon McManus Den are both owned in only 10% of leagues. Pick them up if you need a streaming option this week.
  • We have Minnesota and New Orleans as our highest scoring game of the week. But MathBox is high on Will Lutz NO and low on Dan Bailey Min. Go figure.
