What did we learn from the first week of fanvesting?

W1 Weekly Recap

The first week of football was filled with major upsets and wild swings in the Fanvest market.

Week 1 Winners

Here‘s how the leaderboard shook out for Week 1:

  • Avg Top 5 Score: $FBX 41,400
  • Avg 6-10 Score: $FBX 19,064
  • Top 10-50 Score: $FBX 9,936

Later in the article we‘ll highlight the top earners and explain how they built such massive portfolios (hint: it’s not just picking upsets).

Fanvestors deployed a wide variety of strategies in Week 1, but the common theme among top earners was reinvesting fanbucks from winning teams. Below we break out the combined holdings for all users in the Top 50:

TEN and PIT were the most widely held teams because fanvestors rolled all their winnings from the weekend into the Monday Night games.

It’s all about the ‘dogs

Big underdogs, teams with a share price < $FBX 30, present the highest potential return on the Fanvest markets.

There were 3 big underdogs that pulled out the upset in Week 1:

Going all-in on the biggest underdog may earn you a spot in the Top 50, but it won’t land you in the Top 10.

Let’s walk through an example:

  • All users start with an initial balance of $FBX 2,500
  • Using your entire starting balance, you could have purchased 96 shares of JAX at their closing price of $FBX 25.87.
  • After JAX won, you would have received +$FBX 9,600.
  • That would have placed you in #31

So if it picking the week’s top earner isn’t enough, how did those fanvestors generate such massive portfolio values?

Reinvest earnings from winners

After each game, owners of the winning team will receive $FBX 100 per share (also listed in your Transactions page).

Elite fanvestors were able to distance themselves from the competition by reinvesting earnings from winning teams.

Let’s review an example of one fanvestor who used this strategy to perfection:

Fanvestor Spotlight — Jacobabbycalebsnyder | 1st Place with $FBX 52,159.38

Jacobabbycalebsnyder started with a conservative investment on Thursday night by going all-in on KC. They reinvested those earnings multiple times throughout the weekend, between a combination of favorites and underdogs, to maximize their portfolio value.

  • Thursday Night Football: KC investment returned +$FBX 3,700
  • Sunday 1pm ET Games: SEA investment returned $FBX 6,800
  • Sunday 4pm ET Games: ARI investment returned $FBX 23,500
  • Sunday Night Football: LAR investment returned $FBX 16,400
  • Monday Night Football: PIT investment returned $FBX 49,000
  • Monday Night Football: TEN investment returned $FBX 6,700

Jacobabbycalebsnyder was the only fanvestor to select a winner in every single time-slot.

Closer look at the Top 5

Let’s take a look into the strategies of other Top 5 fanvestors

Fanvestor Spotlight — Rico-Sauve | 2nd Place with $FBX 46,849

After missing on the first primetime game, Rico-Sauve showed no fear by risking it all on underdogs in both the Sunday and Monday Night games.

Fanvestor Spotlight — Chefdonut | 3rd Place with $FBX 43,624

Chefdonut took a more conservative approach by going with the heavy-favorite (PIT) on Monday Night. Rico-Sauve was able to jump him this week with the TEN win, but over the long run the conservative approach may be the more prudent strategy.

Fanvestor Spotlight — tsong160 | 5th Place with $FBX 23,841

Things looked bleak initially when tsong160 lost ~20% of their portfolio on Thursday Night, but they were able to bounce back by hitting on a big underdog in the early slate and then two consecutive prime-time winners.
