Traditional ways to invest in sports are broken

Sports gambling pits the bookmaker against the consumer. In daily fantasy sports (DFS), professionals take home the majority of the prize money. And in traditional fantasy leagues, most users spend far more of their time on player research than they’d ever want to admit — yet most of them haven’t won a fantasy league to date.

Both DFS and sports betting thrive by profiting off you. Your losses are their gain. They set and control the prices or the odds. And sportsbooks deliberately set lines that exploit your biases — typically forcing you to risk 1.10x to win x on 50% chances of winning — an onerous transaction cost of -4.55% in long-term expected value.

If the economics for fantasy sports and sports wagering are so unattractive from the user’s perspective, why do millions of people nonetheless continue to participate?

Because until now there haven’t been any alternatives…

Thanks to the Supreme Court’s May 2018 repeal of PASPA, which lifted the federal ban on sports betting…
