By now, you should have an idea of just how powerful a tool Twitter can be for engaging with potential and current consumers, building brand recognition, and sharing promotions and news. It can be difficult to gain traction on Twitter, however. One of the first steps in doing so is ensuring that you have filled out all the boxes and created a Twitter profile that is optimized for drawing in as many people as possible. Here are some tips for building an effective Twitter profile:

  1. Equip your profile with images. Be sure that you have a profile picture and a cover photo. And ensure that the photos you choose are up-to-date, high quality, and in line with your branding, so as to be easily recognizable. For profile pictures, it may help with brand recognition to use the same image across social media channels. Try to use images that are correctly sized- Twitter recommends profile picture dimensions of 400x400 pixels, and cover photo dimensions of 1500 x 1500 pixels. You can use online photo editing tools like Pixlr or Canva to create and/or edit these images.
  2. Make sure all the fields are filled out. Choose a handle and username that match your company or brand name and are consistent with your name across other social media channels. The handle will be included in your unique Twitter URL, whereas the username will appear next to your profile picture with all your tweets.Fill out your location and add a link to your website to add legitimacy to your account (and to drive traffic to the site).
  3. Craft your bio. Your twitter bio is extra important, as it will be used as the meta-description in Google search results. Thus, be sure to include a description of what your business does, including any keywords of the brand that people are likely to search for. You can also include hashtags to help people find you on Twitter. If there is extra space, add links to a new product or blog post, or to other social media accounts.

The three steps above are what you need to be sure that you start off on the right foot on Twitter! Having a good profile that is optimized for search and clearly shows the brand and what your brand or company does is a huge part of getting new followers and building brand recognition. Once you have the profile set up, the next step is to start tweeting and engaging!
