Germany has always been a nation, where winter sports are very popular. It’s no surprise that we’ve always brought home good results from the various World Cups and also Olympic Games. Now, after the first week of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Germany is the leading team in the overall medal table, having won 6 gold medals until Friday night. Some of the winners started their competitions as favourites, while other wins came as big surprises. FANZONE offers all 149 Team D winter athletes as NFTs [SHOP HERE].

Especially Team D’s luge & skeleton athletes were dominating in week 1 of Beijing 2022.

The first gold medal came in the luge discipline, where the German athletes were considered favourites. Fresh from his win in the overall World Cup, German luger Johannes Ludwig won the men’s singles competition. This is his first Olympic gold medal in singles competition. He won bronze in the same category four years ago, where he also won the relay competition with the team, achieving his first Olympic gold medal.

Denise Herrmann was one of the surprise victories in the German camp. The German biathlete won gold over the 15km singles competition in biathlon, after extraordinary performances in shooting and skiing. After a difficult season this was undoubtedly a highlight of the first Olympic week from the German perspective. After a bronze medal in the relay in cross country skiing in the 2014 Olympic Winter games, this is her second Olympic medal in two different disciplines.

Another luger would win the third gold medal for Germany. Natalie Geisenberger won her 5th Olympic gold medal, by securing the win in the women’s single discipline in front of her compatriot Anna Berreiter. Geisenberger now has won the singles category in the last three Olympics and had won the last two gold medals in the teams competition as well. She is now the most successful German Olympian, sharing these honours with German luge double Wendl/Arlt.

The Nordic combination has always seen German athletes near the top. With past Olympic champion Eric Frenzel and other favourites being forced out of competition by a positive Covid test, it was the time for the other German athletes to take over. Vinzenz Geiger did exactly that by winning his first Olympic singles medal from the normal hill and over 10km. Geiger had previously won gold with the team in the 2018 Olympics and was able to claw back 1:26 minutes in skiing, to take the win by 0.8 seconds!

Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt once again stamped their authority on the doubles category in luge. After winning Olympic gold in the previous two Olympics, they did it again in the 2022 Winter Olympics. To complete the dominance of the German athletes, the second luge double from Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken. This was their 5th gold medal at Olympic Games and there was one luge competition left.

As a team, the three Olympic Champions, Geisenberger, Ludwig and Wendl/Arlt won the sixth gold medal for the German team. This also was the sixth gold medal for Natalie Geisenberger and for the team of Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt respectively. Together they now share the honours of being the most successful German Olympians of all time, overtaking Claudia Pechstein and her 5 gold medals. German Lugers have won 11 of the 12 past Olympic luge competitions with the women’s, doubles and team competition being undefeated in the Olympics since 2014.
