We are super excited to welcome yet another club as an official partner of FANZONE! Our partner has more than 60 years of competitive history and have recently celebrated one of their biggest successes! This club is feared by their opponents for their unconventional playing style, which has been described as “organized chaos” by an opposing coach. We present you the basketball club of MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg!
This basketball department was founded as part of the DJK Ludwigsburg in 1960. From 1970–1987, the basketball department changed to the Spvgg 07 Ludwigsburg club. During this time they advanced to the basketball Bundesliga for the first time after their 1979/1980 season.
BG Ludwigsburg was formed after the separation from the club in December 1987. Their main sponsor was the energy delivery company EnBW, which also was integrated in the name. In order to separate professional and amateur sport, the team was separated from the club itself. All youth and amateur teams are still part of the main club. Despite the separation there still is a strong cooperation between the team and the main club to secure and strengthen the future of the Bundesliga team.
In 2006/2007 EnBW Ludwigsburg went into the playoffs for the first time and made it to the final-four! A year later they celebrated their biggest success to that date, becoming vice-champion in the BBL Pokal. After their 2012/2013 season their sponsor EnBW ended the partnership and they renamed themselves “Neckar Riesen Ludwigsburg”. The cool part about this opportunity was that their fans had a say when the new logo of the club was chosen!
Lacking success in the Bundesliga, the team was set to move down to the 2nd Bundesliga but we’re able to buy a wildcard, because another team was unable to move up. They had another name change in 2013/2014 to their current name, MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg. A fifth place in 2015/2016 season was their best result since 2007.
They began to show consistency, reaching four consecutive playoffs in a row in 2016/2017. They also reached the semi-final of the BBL Pokal which was known as an immense success! They achieved even bigger goals in the following season, reaching the semi-final of the Champions League and eventually finished 4th! Their coach John Patrick was crowned as “the best coach of the season”. Before Covid put a hold on the 2019/2020 season they made it to the playoffs in second position and reached the final, just coming short. They crowned themselves main season champions in the 2020/2021 season with a club record of 30 wins and only 4 losses, but they fell short in the semi-finals, losing to the basketball team of FC Bayern München.
In total 102,066 fans came to watch the games during the 2016/2017 season! On average, 3878 fans saw the Bundesliga games and around 2871 fans came to see them play in each of their Champions League home games. The team is supported by their official fan club the “Barock Pirates Ludwigsburg”. They are trying to create a unique fan experience and shape the fan culture of the club. During their home games they create unique memories by choreographies and funny projects. They are known for organizing things outside of the stadium and are well known for having a big and passionate fan community.
On the court, the team is known for their unconventional playing style which originates from their coach. In the beginning of his coaching career, his club did not have the money to buy tall players, so he decided to let smaller players occupy these positions. This resulted in a lot of changes for their opponents and substitutions due to teams who were used to strategizing their gameplay against taller players and were forced to have a more physically demanding playing style when facing their team. Their playing style is often described as “40 minutes of hell”.
This team leaves an impact in the league with their unique playing style, and they also leave an impact on the city of Ludwigsburg. They consider themselves to be a true part of the community of Ludwigsburg and are involved in various social projects. They are active supporters in projects in the fields of caritative care, addiction prevention and other volunteer projects such as “Gib Rassismus einen Korb” , that fights against racial discrimination.
We are proud to have this club as our partner and admire their social work in the community. We share similar values, to “do good” in our communities. Together with their unique playing style and contributions to social projects, they fit perfectly with the philosophy of FANZONE and we are very much looking forward for exciting times together.
