VfL Wolfsburg is one of the only few German football clubs that has a women’s team that is equally, if not more successful, than their male counterpart! Especially in the last few years they have collected many trophies and are a mainstay at the top of German and European football.

The city of Wolfsburg had their first women’s team in 1973, which would go on to be in the final of the DFB-Pokal in 1984 where they would just fall short of the win. Known as the VfR Eintracht Wolfsburg, they also were one of the founding members of the Frauen-Bundesliga in 1990. After financial trouble the club was taken over by WSV Wendschott in 1997 and they immediately made an impact, winning the Regionalliga with a record 21 wins out of 22 games! In that season they scored 121 goals and only conceded one goal during the whole season. After dominating that season, they advanced to the Bundesliga.

In 2001 VfL Wolfsburg founded their Women’s football department and took over the team from WSV Wendschott in 2003, immediately moving up to the Bundesliga in 2006. In the following years they continued to improve their position and followed up with the qualification for the Champions League.

In their first Champions League season they set out to surprise everyone, winning the title after beating fan favourite Olympique Lyon. In the same season they also won the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. They would defend their Champions League title, making them the first German team to successfully defend the Champions League title ever! They also were a part of another record when they, alongside with the Men’s team, won the DFB-Pokal in 2015, being the first club where the Men’s and Women’s team would win the DFB-Pokal in the same season. The women’s team continued their winning ways, racking up 7 successive DFB-Pokal wins between 2015 and 2021. Additionally, they won the Bundesliga six times, winning 4 consecutive titles between 2016 and 2020.

Before moving into their new, modern stadium they hosted the match with the most spectators in a game from the Women’s Bundesliga, ever. The last game of the Bundesliga Season was seen by 12,464 spectators live. The new AOK Stadium provides the team with a modern infrastructure, including fitness, training and recovery facilities inside the complex. This way the Women’s team is prepared in the best way to continue their winning ways in national and international competitions.
