Last week I convinced the boy to come for a late afternoon drive to Yungaburra with me. Yungaburra is a quaint little village up the Gillies Range from Cairns on the Atherton Tablelands.

I wanted to see the Avenue of Honour that opened last year. With Anzac Day in a few weeks, I thought this would be a fitting time to visit this memorial.

The Avenue is comprised of 60 immature flame trees that when fully grown will provide a living memorial to the soldiers who have been lost in battle in Afghanistan.

The concept for the memorial came from a local father who lost his son in the Afghan war. Through his efforts he has imagined and coordinated a fitting tribute to all the Australian soldiers lost in this war.

The memorial is nestled on the tranquil Tinnaburra Peninsula of Lake Tinaroo. There is an incredible wing sculpture, seating with such intricate detail, anhonour wall and many plaques amongst the beautiful landscaping.

At sunset you could not imagine a more beautiful place for those 60 flame trees to grow up.

I hope you enjoy these photos.
