Our doors opened up to Sub-Saharan Africa’s young and energetic public in the month of May for the second edition of the Food For Thought (FFT) Challenge. Standing by our culture of keeping up with the trends as well as upholding our UN SDG goals; 2 (Zero Hunger) and 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption).

The Challenge title “AGRICULTURE- A post COVID-19 underestimated path for wealth creation” sought to explore opportunities for recovery from the pandemic. We had a diverse group of participants across different locations and disciplines thus providing a holistic view on the topic at hand.👌💯.

The judging criteria was based on the feasibility of the suggestion raised in the individual essays as well as the skill of being succinct and engaging to the reader. The essays went through a two-step judging process with experts in public health and research, agricultural practices, entrepreneurship and of course, professional writing!

An observation is that most entries based their suggestions on agriculture as a whole and not necessarily the diversities and types therein. This shows a gap in the communication and awareness taken to enlighten the public on agriculture. The few participants who showed this basic knowledge in their articles were seemingly not familiar with new, sustainable agricultural trends or rather, didn’t know the impact measure these new trends had on agriculture.

It is also interesting to note that the South Western areas of Nigeria generated more entries than the Northern areas; a seeming paradox being that agriculture (especially farming) is more prominent in the latter. Consequentially, Farmz2U seeks to harness the obvious interest of farming in the South West; identifying a need to engage both regions to work together.

Here are some of the finalists from the FFT Challenge (2nd edition). We had a challenge of selecting the best articles from lots of creative submissions.

Paraphrasing a statement by the Economic Commission for Africa, African countries need to quickly understand that a new model system has to be initiated, while forsaking the pre-pandemic model, where agriculture was less acknowledged and under-utilized.

One thing all the essay entries as well as the un-agriculturally inclined judges agree on is that agriculture is like a volcano 🌋 just waiting to erupt! If and when curtailed rightly with the use of platforms such as Farmz2U 😁, the benefits are immeasurable to practically ALL the actors and stakeholders in the agricultural value chain as well as the world 🌏🌍🌎 at large.

And that’s all we have the time for here on Medium!😓 Get the inside scoop on each entry across our social media channels….
