With digitization and mechanization agricultural techniques can be made simple, easy and time-saving!

Salman, Farmz2u’s VP of Farm Operations

Once upon a time, farmers didn’t have the fancy machine and technology we have now to make the agriculture process easy for them. They had more land, fewer people and insufficient resources for seamless farm operations. All farmers had were their hands and archaic tools.

  • They picked pests and harvested their produce with their hands.
  • They had to beat drums or use slings to scare birds and monkeys from destroying their plants.
  • They gathered animal and plant waste in order for it to convert to rich organic fertilizer overtime….and much more
Sounds tedious right? YES

A lot has changed over the past few years and techniques that make farming less tedious and more exciting have been introduced. Those stresses were important in order to discover easier ways to do things. We probably would have been out in the yard picking pests if not for evolution brought about from these discoveries.

We went from hand to hoes to tractors for harvesting, this is one of the many cases of easier planting and harvesting systems. It gets better, we do not need to look too far to get quality resources to aid in the planting cycle.

In line with these developments, agtech companies like Farmz2u seek to offer digital support to farmers in order to improve their farming practices. With access to internet services and a smartphone, farmers can access the information and resources required for their farming journey .

Agriculture is the source for the three basic things humans need to survive(food, shelter and clothing). As the world is evolving and the population is growing, there is an increased need and demand for food. To address this increased need for food, mechanized and digitized methods are necessary to increase yield and improve economic growth for smallholder farmers. Drones and artificial intelligence tools have the ability to reduce manual tasks for farmers thus enabling the scale of healthy food for consumption.

How is this Good News for Farmers?

Advances in machinery help farmers expand the scale, speed, and productivity of farm equipment in order to cover a large portion of land in a short period of time. The way Seed, irrigation, and fertilizers are applied have also vastly improved which helps farmers increase yields which means revenue increase

The increase in yield also tackles the issue of food insecurity which is one of rising issues in Africa and the world at large.
Introduction of digital and mechanized systems also appeals to young people to join this sector.
