A very long time ago, farming seemed to be the major occupation that everyone indulged in and as time went by humans became preoccupied with other affairs. Things evolved, as well as technology, and farming also took shape.

The narrative of farming that it is crude and tasking is now becoming seemingly untrue as there are a lot of improvements in terms of operations, techniques, and machinery. Agricultural technology is the application of techniques to control the growth and harvesting of animal and vegetable products, like soil preparation, tilling, fertilizing, harvesting, and all other processes involved.

Farming is an all round profession. It employs sciences to develop viable seeds, technology to make better machineries, business to track supply and demand chain, and information to keep records of development.

Farming is as lucrative as all other thriving fields. It provides a major element for survival, food. Food is indispensable as we are human beings. Farming also provides raw materials for a lot of finished goods. Asides from metal, stones and plastics, farming is the main and primary source of our daily essentials. With an undeniable large market, income accrued from farming is encouraging.

Farming can be specialized. There are different areas of specialization like agricultural economics, food science, livestock production, forestry and woodland management, fish farming, horticulture, pasture management and hydroponics among others. In recent times, farmers have been practicing regenerative agriculture, which describes holistic farming systems that, among other benefits, improve water and air quality, enhance ecosystem biodiversity, produce nutrient-dense foods, and stores carbon to help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Farming is also a high tech profession. With the latest development, Artificial Intelligence can provide farmers with real-time insights from their fields, allowing them to identify areas that need irrigation, fertilization, or pesticide treatment. There is also the use of drones to optimize the use of inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, water, and pesticides more efficiently. High technological devices can also be used for security of farm land. And, information and technological devices can be used for Digital Information Sharing. These innovations enables the farmer purchase necessities more easily and also sell produce more promptly.

Farming is not only a profession. It’s a lifestyle of conscious effort to provide solutions to a number of problems today, not in the least climate change among others!
