Senator Aodhán O’Riordáin

Senator Aodhán O’Riordáin delivers the kind of straight talk about president-elect Donald Trump that many in the U.S. would rather not hear.

In a speech from the floor of the Irish Senate, O’Riordáin criticized his own government for offering a warm welcome to Trump.

“ How are we supposed to deal with this monster who has just been elected of America?” he asked.

More critically, the senator connected Trump’s ascendancy to the global rise of fascist political movements.

“We are at an ugly international crossroads,” he said. “What’s happening across Europe is appalling. What’s happening across Britain is appalling.”

Finally, the senator noted that there are likely many Irish immigrants illegally in the U.S. who are now afraid of their status.
