One thing that always fascinates me is the future. In particular the future of retail.

Is it virtual reality runway shows? Is it smart clothing? Or is it technology assisted social shopping?

The possibilities are limitless. However, one area is the most intriguing.

3-D Printing

30 years ago no one could’ve imagined a day when computers would be as ubiquitous as we find them today. Over the course of the next 30 I see 3D printers assuming a similar role.

How It Works

The interface would be very reminiscient of how our cellphones operate today. The image above shows a system that would allow for users to sift through various designers.

Then a display would appear with an array of options similar to above. The permutations with this system in terms of color, cut, and other personal quirks are endless. Once an item has been selected it’s qualities would be sent to the system.

From here the process functions similarly to how printers do now.

Fascinating stuff, right?

“The technology for a clothing printer exists but is not packaged in a form that would be suitable for consumer use. With the future potential of printing technology, an at-home clothing printer is a definite possibility.” — Joshua Harris

Yes, please.

I mean as if being a compulsive shopper wasn’t hard enough.
