WHAT I’M WEARING
Writing Prompt: What I’m Wearing
The ubiquitous black and white chess dress
It all started with a wedding.
Not my wedding. My best friend from high school’s. When she asked me to be her maid-of-honor, she said I could buy whatever dress I wanted, as long as it fit her theme colors of black, white, and burgundy.
I found the perfect dress at my local mall — or what I thought was the perfect dress. When I arrived at the church and met the other bridesmaid, I was embarrassed to find that her dress was ankle-length, while mine fell right at my knees.
Well, the see-through white filmy part did. The actual solid fabric underneath the film started well above my knees. In hindsight, it was not at all appropriate for a wedding. I’m still mortified at the thought.
Incidentally, I almost flashed everyone at that wedding by taking a tumble while walking down the aisle. As a person who never in her life has worn high-heeled shoes, I somehow got it in my mind that six-inch heels would be a great accessory. Halfway down the aisle, I began to teeter. I barely, just barely, made it to my place.
