What to wear for the holidays

Trying to be cute when it’s cold out can be tough

LOL or what not to wear…

Ah, the holidays are creeping up. Or as you may be feeling, AHH! THE HOLIDAYS ARE CREEPING UP!! Yeah, I’ve been there, and I think I can speak for many when I say, WTF am I wearing this holiday season? Now, I am going to be talking about Christmas time specifically, but I feel that this could translate for other holidays pretty well too.

So Christmas Eve is always a fun time for me. I usually spend it in New York City with my boyfriend, A.J., my family, his family, or both! Last year was particularly great because the weather was absolutely amazing. Here in New York, you’re usually freezing your A$$ off by the time November rolls around. Gotta love it…

Awe, shucks, here’s a very original (sarcasm) photo in front of the tree at Rockefeller center 2015

So, this photo is not meant to really focus terribly on my outfit. Sadly, I don’t have a great picture of it, but note how we both aren’t bundled up! I was wearing a high-waisted orange-y flare skirt, black tank crop top (yes, a crop top), black tights, and tall boots with a heel. Very functional, cute, and versatile, which came in handy for the events that were to occur that evening. Get ready for this one.

After meeting with my family at Carmine’s in NYC for dinner, A.J. and I went to hang out with his mother and siblings. Long story short, we ended up at this rooftop club, Le Bain, which was a lot of fun. If you’re not familiar with it, click the link for more info. It’s not the place you’d expect to end up with your boyfriend and his mom on Christmas Eve, but hey we got drinks, and be-friended this whole Australian family, so that’s cool. Oh, and at some point, I ended up inside the club watching A.J.’s younger brother, Kyle, try and pick up Italian models. But I digress — I remember being very happy wearing what I had on being that we were hanging out at a trendy club in the city. Come on, I know I raved about big sweaters in my first post, but this is about a night out on the town! I figured I could give the sweater a rest for one night.

Holiday outfits are tricky, but remember, just keep it simple and classy. If you follow that rule of thumb, then you’ll end up with an outfit that is appropriate enough for hanging around the grandparents, but can easily be worn out dancing the night away!

Color doesn’t matter so much, don’t be afraid to experiment a little — do whatever works for you!

When in doubt, throw on some tights! I always have such a hard time dressing for the weather! If it’s too cold or rainy, then it’s going to take me a little longer putting something together. In the cooler seasons, tights are always a staple for me. Color doesn’t matter so much, don’t be afraid to experiment a little— do whatever works for you! These are a dark gray color from American Apparel. They are sheer, however, the material is a little thicker than other tights, which isn’t a bad thing. American Apparel clothes are pricey, but good quality. The sweater I’m rockin’ is also from there. Of course, I’m in a flare skirt. This style of skirt is very flattering, I feel, for many people. It sits right around my belly button and then flows out so it allows for that hour glass shape. Throw on some cute booties, and you’re ready for whatever the night brings!

Funny thing about this outfit is that it may be my look for the holidays this year. I’ve been trying to figure out what to wear for Christmas Eve. When I was scrolling through old pictures on my camera roll, this popped up, and I thought, “hmm, not bad.” Remember, I’m no fashion guru. I’m just a girl who likes to wear clothes and talk about them.

In the famous words of Beyonce, I was “Feelin’ myself.”

Now, what about office parties? I work as a school nurse, so we don’t necessarily have “office parties”, but we do go out for dinner/drinks. Depending on the place, it’s nice to get a little more dressed up. So why not throw on that little black dress? It’s a great go-to when you’re not entirely sure how dressy to go. I feel that you just can’t go wrong with it. To the left is my outfit that I wore to my work holiday party 2 years ago. What I loved was that it covered without covering too much, if ya catch my drift. This dress is from H&M. The price is escaping me at the moment, my apologies! Cut me some slack though — it’s from 2 years ago! As I was going to attach the link for the store, I totally got side-tracked and almost started “adding to cart!” #toomanycutethings. I love shopping online or in store. What’s interesting about this dress is that I actually bought it online! I was very hesitant at first because one thing I can not STAND is having to return something! Drives me up a wall! Alas, I took a breath, made the purchase, and was so happy I did! It fit perfectly! In the famous words of Beyonce, I was “Feelin’ myself.” So my advice, if you know your body pretty well, and you’re alright with sizing yourself, take a chance and order online. I’ve been doing this a lot lately and have been surprising myself each time! Yay, no returns! The dress has a slight stretch to it which helps to hug my body nicely. There was no dancing at the party, #sadface, but if there was, I feel I would have done just fine, and by that I mean, probably make a fool of myself — whatevs! Moral of the story, little black dresses rock! Am I right?!

The shoes I’m wearing aren’t anything fancy, and that’s just my style. I don’t splurge on expensive heels and that’s because I kinda look like a baby calf trying to take her first steps. It’s just bad news bears. If you’re anything like me, you KNOW how important it is to have heels look and feel good. You will never catch me walking in anything higher than 3 inch heels (3 inches is already daring). If I am, please escort me back home or wherever I can find different shoes before I bust my A$$. Save me from embarrassment please, and thank you in advance! These shoes are just right for me. The brand is “me too”, and I’m pretty sure I got them at Marshalls or T.J. Maxx. Great stores to check out when you want the designer brand, but not for the designer price.

So we’ve covered the basics. Okay class, what have we learned? You know the crazy antics I got into Christmas Eve last year; the fact that I can barely walk in heels…LOL just kidding. I’m hoping you took away at least some fashion tips as well. Hey, if you end up just laughing at my stories though, that works too. Remember, no need to go too crazy or expensive. It is possible to look good with just some basic pieces! What do you guys wear while galavanting around this holiday season? Any funny stories to share? Leave a comment below!
