Evolution of shopping: from department stores to total digitization with FastBuy.

In the second half of the 19th-century under the influence of Industrial Revolution occurred transition single-function shops selling one type of good, to the department store where a large variety of goods were sold, that became quite similar to what we can see today.

Department stores were very similar to today’s shopping centers, there were places where shoppers could spend their leisure time and be entertained. Some department stores even offered reading rooms, art galleries and concerts. Most department stores had tea-rooms or dining rooms and offered treatment areas where ladies could indulge in a manicure. The fashion show, which originated in the US in around 1907, became a staple feature event for many department stores and celebrity appearances were also used to great effect. Consumers have spent the day enjoying the pleasures of shopping.

In 1950 there was am attempt to create first true self-service store. Sainsbury’s store opened in Croydon. As Alan Sainsbury found out to his cost, the concept wasn’t universally popular. When one customer realized that the days of simply handing over a shopping list were numbered, she reputedly showed her disapproval by taking the wire basket she had been given and throwing it at him.

July 5, 1994 Jeff Bezos created Amazon. In one of the recent interview he said:

Not Amazon happened to bookstores — future happened to bookstores

Started from just a bookstore in 2015 Amazon surpassed Walmart as the most valuable retailer in the United States by market capitalization. 20 years company was pretty focused in online retail, but in 2017 with acquiring Whole Foods Market for $13.4 billion, things changed. In 2018 first Amazon GO grocery store was opened to the general public in Seattle. Amazon GO uses cameras and sensors to detect items that a shopper grabs off shelves and automatically charges a shopper’s Amazon account.

On the other side of the world, Alibaba Group that was always focused on e-commerce invested $2.9 billion for a 36% stake in Sun Art Retail Group, the largest operator of supermarkets and hypermarkets in China — Hema. Alibaba made move to physical stores, but not just traditional store. Hema now is fully digitalized grocery store.

With all of that you can see that there is no online versus offline retail in 2018. The future is in complete digitization of all shopping. Once realized that we’ve decided to help all grocery stores made that move forward the future.
