We have been very busy over this summer at Studio Zed and thought it timely to share with you all what we, and our fantastic students, have been up to. In its third year of running, Studio Zed, offers high performing students the opportunity to work in a creative studio environment, getting first-hand experience with real clients on a wide variety of professional design jobs.

Co-Directors, Simone O’Callaghan and Carl Morgan, run a Pop Up studio over the summer, through UON course DESN3411: Creative Studio Placement. In 2020, we have a team with a broad range of skillsets with students from Bachelor of Visual Communication Design, Bachelor of Natural History Illustration and Bachelor of Creative Industries. This year, as with every previous year, we are blown away by the hard work and dedication of our students who produce fantastic design work for our clients in fast turnaround jobs of just four weeks.

We have delivered some very exciting projects, all working with lovely clients who have been impressed by what the studio has been delivering. These include:

  • An illustrated childrens’ book on water conservation from a cultural viewpoint for the Hunter Water collaboration with Newcastle High School facilitated by Deirdre Heitmeyer. This project was a collaboration between high school students, the UON School of Education, artist Saretta Fielding and the Awabakal and Worimi communities.
  • A ten year commemorative book for Hunter community group, Arts in Recovery, celebrating the value of the arts in mental health recovery.
Daisy Smart — (Work-in-progress)
  • Visual identity, web design and layout for the ARC funded Digital Humanities Project, TLC map, which develops and brings together a wide range of mapping tools so that researchers can link historical and cultural information in mapped form.
  • SmartSpace Design, wall and floor illustration for Newcastle Art Gallery, in collaboration with This Land AR and Arku Meta, for the WARWAR exhibition.
SmartSpace by Brooke Saide & Puck Van der Linden (Work-in-progress)
  • Visual identity, branding and collateral for a new low-to-zero waste fashion collection by designers High Tea with Mrs Woo, working in collaboration with UoN researchers.
Liliana Wills — (Work-in-progress)

This week it’s all noses to the grindstone as we work to deadlines to complete all five projects before the commencement of Semester 1 which, as you can see, is a massive undertaking but we know we can do it!
