  • (0:40) When you build a product you initially want to open it to as many people as possible, and some will try to hijack it. Justin.TV for example was being used to stream copyrighted content all over the world.
  • (1:07) Hard to say you don’t want those users, because they might help you figure out what a considerable part of users really want from your product. For Justin.TV, many of these users were video gamers, and they helped shape the idea to transforms Justin.TV to Twitch and therefore a much bigger community. It’s important to study users that use your products in unintended by interesting ways. But beware of users that just create harm (even if they don’t necessarily mean to) and add no long-term value. Kick out those users. Don’t support those users unless they’re generating revenues (not the case with free products) or they’re letting you learn something. Balance the positive and negatives.
  • (5:50) Don’t let the hijack users steer you away from your core features and roadmap. It’s ok to experiment with some use cases that you didn’t think of, but don’t lose control.
