BBC One’s Father Brown will return to television screens in 2021 with a ninth series. The daytime period drama, co-developed by Rachel Flowerday and Tahsin Guner, has been immensely popular with viewers since it first hit television screens back in 2013.

The titular character, played by Harry Potter alumnus Mark Williams, is a Cotswolds-based Roman Catholic priest. The priest, whilst local police would rather he not involve himself in their work, has proven himself incredibly helpful.

Kembleford, the fictional village where one can find Father Brown’s parish, is reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s St Mary Mead. There is nothing ordinary about the goings on that occur in this apparently sleepy Cotswold village.

Father Brown, loosely based on GK Chesterton’s short stories, largely features original narratives specifically written for the period drama. A significant portion of the first series, most notably The Hammer of God and The Blue Cross, were based on Chesterton’s work.
