The Paul Gibson-directed The Crimson Feather, televised in the British Isles on Tuesday, 10 January 2017, introduces Father Brown fans to Joselyn O’Donnell (Eva Feiler). Joselyn, related to Bridgette McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack), is the parish secretary’s niece and goddaughter.

Mrs McCarthy, not wanting any bad influences to beset her niece, warns Lady Penelope “Bunty” Windermere (Emer Kenny) in advance of meeting Joselyn to keep her ways to herself.

The following morning, when Mrs McCarthy delivers to her bedroom breakfast, the parish secretary discovers a bed not slept in and a note. Further to the note, discovered on the floor next to the bed, is a red feather. Mrs McCarthy, concerned for Joselyn’s safety, wants the police to look for her goddaughter.

Inspector Gerry Mallory (Jack Deam), despite Mrs McCarthy’s concern, correctly observes there is very little the police can do…
