Chief Inspector Edgar Sullivan’s dreams of leaving Kembleford, after his confidential informant is discovered murdered, are scuppered. Further, in addition to the murder charge, the chief inspector faces charges revolving around receiving stolen goods.

Chief Inspector Edgar Sullivan, on the wrong side of the law, finds himself arrested and placed in a cell after his confidential informant, one Mr. Harry Davenport, is discovered murdered. Mr. Davenport, whilst Chief Inspector Sullivan was staking out the wrong residence, was murdered seemingly during a burglary.

Sergeant Francis, apparently a rising star at Scotland Yard, arrives from London. Curiously, not long there after, Sergeant Frances happens upon jewellery that had been stolen during past burglaries in the chief inspector’s possession.

Interestingly, a curious point of fact, it was Detective Superintendent Alan Alford that had sent Sergeant Francis to Kembleford. Detective Superintendent Alford, during a police corruption hearing, is the very person Chief Inspector Sullivan was to testify against. The hearing, if it ad moved forward as scheduled, would have seen…
