Sidney “Sid” Carter, following his conviction for allegedly assaulting Judith Miles, is released from prison. Sid spent a year in prison. Miles, then a prostitute, is now working in a solicitor’s office.

Sid, bent on revenge, confronts Giles Foster for the terrible job he did as his defence lawyer. Foster, now a judge, has moved on from his former career. Sid, accompanied by Father Brown to Edward Reese’s residence, doesn’t pull his metaphorical punches.

Reese appointed Foster as a judge. Foster, having been stabbed in the throat with a glass, is discovered dead. Reese’s son, Randolph Reese, points the accusatory finger in Sid’s direction.

Meanwhile, as the episode progresses, Father Brown becomes the target of a paid assassin. Unsurprisingly, focusing on the relatively minor details, Father Brown ponders the reasons for a pail of ashes.
