You’ve got your list of goals for the coming year, but you’re terrified. Thinking about facing your fears, and bridges you must cross scares you. Reaching your goals is never easy, because it wouldn’t be an accomplishment if it wasn’t hard. Venturing out of your comfort zone is like opening Pandora’s box — it’s chaotic and scary. You might think that the whole world is out to sabotage you, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

First, you need to get to the root of the problem. How do you expect yourself to fix something when you don’t even know what the cause is? You can start by being aware of your limitations, and from there you can plan out your future. It will be easier to dive into the unknown when you’ve become fully aware of the world around you.

After becoming aware, you should start exposing yourself to your fear carefully, and then you’ll learn that you’re stronger than you think. People often withdraw from their goals before even trying, because they were afraid. Instead of running away from your fears — expose yourself to what scares you most. As a result, it will make you braver. You’re toughening up, and soon you’ll be able to stand up to the people around you.

According to the wisest man we know, Jordan Peterson (professor of psychology, clinical psychologist, public speaker and best selling author), “the trick for humans thriving in the face of suffering, malevolence is strength not protection”. When you spoil yourself with protection throughout your life, you’ll never fully expose yourself to the chaotic world you live in.

It’s easy to take advantage of the protection you had, simply because it was easier that way. You had a safe place to hide, so why bother facing the big bad scary world? When you’re constantly hiding, you’re missing your chance to learn how to properly deal with real issues, and how to achieve your goals.

There’s so much potential in you, but when you continue to cower and hide, you’ll never reach your goals. Facing your fears is the first step you need to take to succeed in this world.
