Why are the Holidays are Just as Important as Work?
All work and no play does make you dull. We know how life can get hectic and chaotic, but there are times when you need to switch off the world and go on a holiday. Your office isn’t going to fall apart without you there, and you co-workers will survive without you for a few days. Holidays are just as important as your work. There are numerous reasons why it’s important, so we will be naming four reasons why the holidays are important.
- Gives you time to destress and unwind - When you’re constantly tangled with the pressures of work it makes it hard to see things clearly. Taking time off will help you manage your work/life balance, and being aware of this balance you’ll be able to stay sane and avoid burnout.
- You can improve your concentration - Going on a holiday will also improves your effectiveness throughout the year. When your head is filled with deadlines and project, you’ll have a harder time concentrating. By taking time off work, you’re giving your mind a chance to replenish itself.
- It’s very good for your body - If you’re not giving yourself time to rest, you’re putting yourself your heart at risk. In 2012 a systematic review of the relationship between long working hours and coronary heart disease revealed that people who work more than 8 hours a day have a 40% higher risk of heart disease. Even though it’s only correlation, researchers believe that there could be a connection due to factors such as stress and lack of sleep. Besides avoiding a broken heart, not going on a vacation can fry your brain. According to psychologist Jessica de Bloom, “People felt healthier during vacation. They had a better mood. They were less tense. And they had a higher level of energy, and they were more satisfied with their life.” Your mind needs rest too, because by letting your mind wander and rest you’ll be more creative. Spending time away from your desk, will do you wonders.
- Spending quality time with your family - No matter how busy you are, getting a chance to spend time with your family is always a good thing. I know it’s cheesy, and I’m getting all sentimental — family is important. The holidays are the perfect time to bond with them, because there will be nothing distracting you.
Work is important, but giving yourself a break is essential. Honestly, you’re not useful when you’re burnt out and frazzled. Taking time off won’t make you less productive, and it definitely won’t make you a terrible employee. A holiday is made to help you relax and take care of yourself. Some workplaces are more than happy to give you time off, for example at PAYFAZZ employees are given 18 days of annual leave. We want to make sure that you’re not working to the bone, and that you have time to regroup and refresh yourself.
