Research done at the University of Illinois revealed that the ambient noise in a coffee shop, which is about seventy decibels, improved one’s performance to brainstorm ideas. “Extreme quiet tends to sharpen your focus,” said Ravi Mehta, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois. “This is why if you’re too focused on a problem and you’re not able to solve it.” Moderate levels of noise helps people think outside of the box, Mehta stated. However, one should carefully note that this mainly applies to creative tasks. Detailed work is best done in a quiet environment, he said.

“It creates a good study location,” the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrote.
