Like most women who exist in this world, I’ve had plenty of experience with being targeted for harassment simply because I’m a woman.

Growing up in the States, I became increasingly aware of the response I would get from men as I walked down the street coming home from school, or even just walking to the mall with my friends.

At first, I didn’t mind it and maybe even felt a little flattered by the attention. I was growing into my “womanly” body and was excited to be looked at as a woman and not a child.

But after a few years of the constant hollering and cat-calling, that flattery turned into annoyance and even anger. I started to feel uncomfortable in my own body and became hyper-aware of the clothes I was wearing and even the way that I was walking.

Going for a jog in a sports bra and shorts? Forget it. I would have rather suffered the heat in an oversized t-shirt and basketball shorts than to have one more desperate loser whistle at me from his passing car. And even then, the baggy clothing wasn’t enough of a deterrent.
