the anger that I swallow
hides behind a smile
it scratches my throat
kicks and screams
all the way down to my stomach

the anger that I swallow
is mine alone
yet it’s in the blood
mothers daughters sisters grandmothers aunts cousins wives
have swallowed it before
again and again
