The history is undeniable that Confucian principles contributed to the suppression of women in China, even if it was not the primary intent. Historically, the teachings have fostered a patriarchal society where sons are preferred to daughters.

The position of women has always been inferior in relation to men and oppressive acts associated with Confucian principles were often practiced. Confucian philosophy is still followed by many people living in China today and has influenced the culture of Japan, Korea, as well as Vietnam.

The most desirable bride is considered to be a woman who can cook and look after her husband.

Who Was Confucious?

Confucius was a Chinese philosopher, teacher, and political figure from 551 BC to 479 BC. He was well known for his worldview on politics, education, and ethics that became popular during the Han, Tang, and Song dynasties. Although Confucianism was not an organized religion, his views became the official imperial philosophy of China.
