Unattractive Women Are Victims of Sexual Assault Too
It’s not just pretty women who are at risk. ALL women are at risk.
“Who would want to rape you?”
I will never forget the day these words were said to me. I was thirteen-years-old and had been followed by a man in a car during part of my journey to school. I was taking a short cut through a quiet neighborhood to avoid bumping into any of my bullies. I had taken this shortcut many times and nothing had happened so I thought it was safe. I was walking near plenty of houses. It wasn’t a secluded area. But that day I learned that being a girl meant no matter how sensible you are, it often won’t protect you.
The car was driving very slowly behind me as I walked through the neighbourhood. I looked behind me and saw a man in the driver’s seat. He looked old enough to be my dad. He was staring at me. I turned a corner to see if he was following me. He turned the corner too.
“How old are you?”
I didn’t reply. I forced myself not to look behind me. I suddenly became very self-conscious of what I was wearing. I had my school uniform on and because it was summer, I was wearing a skirt. I suddenly felt very exposed.
“Which school do you go to?”
