Last week, we had the pleasure of organising the first Ben’s Bites Meetup in Italy, in our headquarter at Talent Garden Fondazione Agnelli.

If you don’t know what Ben’s Bites is doing and you’re interested in AI, well… check it out here.
Today’s issue is even more valuable due to the major announcements from yesterday: OpenAI GTP-4, Google PalM API and Antrhopic’s Claude API.

The participation from the community was extremely great, we didn’t expect so many people showing up and joining our team into discussing latest AI trends and facts. In this post we will try to recap that a little bit, writing down the most important (in our opinion) takeaways from the event.

AI is the next platform shift

  • Knowledge and information economy is being disrupted

AI is the next platform shift, following in the footsteps of previous shifts like mobile and the internet. Major technological advances have accelerated transitions in the past. In the 1990s, it was the internet. The 2000s brought the era of cloud computing. And in the 2010s, smartphone ubiquity emerged. Emergent platforms have broadened access to knowledge and transformed the way people communicate, create, and consume content. It’s not just us who predict that we are on the brink of the next platform shift. The knowledge and information economy will be significantly impacted by artificial intelligence, enhancing men’s contribution to the creative side while reducing the burden of repetitive tasks by augmenting human creations.

Era of Adoption

  • Affordable AI tech to empower existing digital products.
  • Availability of pre-trained models and Open Source / Open Science platforms that enable ML engineers to collaborate and build new custom models and solutions.

AI is being adopted through a dual approach. Firstly, in recent months, an increasing number of new technologies, products, and companies have entered the market, leveraging affordable AI technology to enhance existing digital products like Notion, Salesforce, and Slack, among others. Generative AI has enabled a wider range of solutions that were previously unimaginable.

Secondly, open shared pre-trained models and open-source/open-science platforms have created opportunities for ML engineers to collaborate and build custom models and solutions. This is opening doors to disruptive changes in the application of new technologies, accessible to both tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy individuals.

Fancy drive up the hills

  • Democratisation of AI
  • Tech giants bulls run
  • Road to a safe and responsible AI

Democratizing AI is a key issue in the AI community, as it is essential for avoiding extreme influence of a few companies, balancing knowledge and resources, and extending the number of people involved in the field. The democratization of AI would allow for a more diverse set of perspectives to contribute to the development of new AI technologies and applications. Tech giants are competing with each other to deliver the most advanced AI services to their customers, and this competition is driving innovation and progress in the field. For example, Microsoft and Google are in a race to transform the web search engine industry by leveraging AI, leading to a natural yet spooky question: will Internet and search engine nature be altered one for all? Moreover, as AI continues to evolve, it is essential to ensure that it is aligned with our values, safe, and responsible. Therefore, the development of safe and responsible AI is a priority for the AI community, and we must work to ensure that AI is used for the betterment of humanity.

Furthermore, promoting safe and responsible AI development, and fostering healthy competition among tech giants are all important priorities for the AI community. As AI continues to evolve, we must work to ensure that it is used for the betterment of humanity and that it reflects our values as a society. The future of AI is bright, and we can expect to see many exciting developments in the field in the coming months and years.

What to expect in the upcoming months

  • Established players’ strategic positioning
  • New powerful large models and many smaller custom models for specific domain and business cases
  • Emerging class of AI native products addressing specialised needs
  • New ML architectures to improve performance and efficiency

In the upcoming months, we can expect to see strategic moves by tech giants as they place their AI products and solutions in the market. With the growing adoption of AI, the competition among big players is increasing, and they are trying to deliver the most advanced AI services to their users. Democratisation of AI is driving innovation and progress in the field, and we can expect to see new classes of AI native products that are addressing vertical needs for specific use cases finding their best product-market fit. These new products will leverage open shared pre-trained models and open source/open science platforms to build custom models and solutions. This trend is indeed supposed to become further suitable as soon as latest architectures development will provide us with even more efficient models. Ensuring that AI reflects our values as a society is a top priority for the AI community, and it is important that we focus on the responsible development of AI to achieve this goal.
