Search engine optimisation is a significant part of any modern businesses user acquisition strategy.

SEO is a tricky thing to master, however there are a few simple things you can easily implement in order to begin to climb Google’s rankings.

The six pillars of basic SEO are your Title, Description, Favicon, Keywords, Open Graph meta tags and Twitter meta tags.

This article will be a brief overview of each of those pillars.

Title

Every single page should have a title, I know this is incredibly obvious, but don’t forget to set a <title> tag.

Description

Your page’s description should be your elevator pitch, make it brief and make it descriptive. Explain the best you can in the fewest words possible.

<meta name="description" content="SEO Best Practices"/>

Favicon

Make your favicon your company’s logo or at least a recognisable image, a browser tab without a favicon looks uncomfortable, so make sure you have one defined.

Keywords

Keywords are an incredibly important aspect of SEO, people usually search Google with collections of keywords rather than plain english, so ranking for keywords related to your website’s niche is the best way to climb the search engine rankings and to drive relevant traffic to your page.

Open Graph Meta Tags

The primary user of the Open Graph format is Facebook, so ensuring that your Open Graph tags are in order increases your shareability on Facebook.

However, Open Graph is an open protocol and not specific to Facebook, so supporting Open Graph tags is a great idea, even if you don’t care about all of those potential Facebook shares.

Twitter Meta Tags

Twitter has it own format for tags and doesn’t follow the Open Graph format. You can specify Twitter specific things within your tags, such as the card format or your Twitter username within the creator tag.
