Augmented Reality is the term for a real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated information.

AR vs VR

Unlike virtual reality, where everything a user sees is generated by a computer, augmented reality keeps the real-world focus, but just adds elements that aren’t really there to enhance the user’s experience.

Applications

  • Mixed reality headsets are helping medics treat people infected with the Coronavirus. Hand gestures allow doctors using the Microsoft devices to look at x-rays, scans and test results, and communicate with colleagues in a different, virus-free room.
  • Furniture and housewares giant IKEA offers an AR app (called IKEA Place) that lets you see how a piece of furniture will look and fit in your space.
  • Military fighter pilots see an AR projection of their altitude, speed, and other data on their helmet visor, which means they don’t need to waste focus by glancing down to see them.
  • Ground crew at Singapore’s airport wear AR glasses to see information about cargo containers, speeding up loading times

Future of Augmented Reality

AR is overtaking the Automobile Industry

A dashboard-mounted display graphics from around a vehicle with the help of camera footage to reduce the occurrence of accidents, as it has the capability of pointing out hazards along with the identification of landmarks.

AR in terms of Teaching and Training

By using augmented reality technology, any information or data can be passed to a learner in real-time.

AR as a novel way of shopping

Virtual fitting rooms that provide try-before-you-buy options in augmented reality spaces.
