In a fraction of a second, individuals instinctively formulate subconscious impressions, shaping opinions on likability, trustworthiness, and attractiveness. For men, determining marital compatibility with a woman can happen within three seconds, emphasizing the profound impact of first impressions.

Law enforcement practices encompass pretext stops and profiling, where officers unconsciously make judgments about every person and vehicle they encounter. These assessments, ingrained through repetition and experience, evolve into conscious thoughts, leading to the development of profiling skills. Proficient officers, skilled in these observations, often secure specialized roles that demand nuanced judgment.

Between 2018 and 2019, my partner and I set a record with over 550 arrests by adeptly applying profiling techniques. Strategically positioning ourselves in inconspicuous locations, such as Walmart parking lots, we targeted suspicious vehicles — usually older models with young occupants. Utilizing our expertise, we ran plates, capitalizing on the absence of justification requirements, often revealing ties to rural areas that warranted closer scrutiny.

Observing peculiar interactions or prolonged stays in parked vehicles, we executed stops in compliance with the law, frequently invoking vehicle and traffic violations. The success of these stops, resulting in numerous arrests, relied on our ability to articulate observed suspicious behaviors as justifiable grounds for intervention.

While effective, I came to realize the inherent ethical concerns within this approach. Profiling is an undeniable reality in policing, and despite commending the integrity of my department, I acknowledged a disagreement with certain legal tactics employed for desired outcomes. Many officers, lacking legal expertise, resort to deception, relying on the high probability of cases being pled rather than proceeding to trial.

In retrospect, my tenure in this unit allowed me to refine my communication skills, fostering a deeper understanding of the unintended repercussions our actions had on individuals. This realization prompted me to reevaluate the ethical implications of our approach, leading to my decision to leave law enforcement.

In essence, profiling remains an inherent reality in policing, and officers proficient in this art can effectively engage individuals, potentially involving them in larger scenarios than anticipated. Reflecting on my experiences, I recognize the importance of balancing law enforcement responsibilities with ethical considerations, emphasizing that outcomes should be achieved within the bounds of justice. It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to continually reassess their practices and ethical principles to foster trust and accountability within the community.

Profiling Realities: A Law Enforcement Officer’s Perspective was originally published in Law Secrets Insider on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

In a stunning turn of events, the unfolding drama surrounding The People V. Page raises questions about the integrity of law enforcement actions, the reliability of witness accounts, and the lack of identification of this former police officer. As we delve into the intricate details of this case, prepare to be captivated by a narrative that challenges the conventional storyline presented by the authorities.

The incident on May 16, 2023, unfolded as Page, a former police officer renowned for his record-setting arrests in 2018 and 2019 and with a clean criminal history, set out on a normal drive. Little did he know, while on the way to his girlfriend’s house to take her out on a date, that this ordinary day would spiral into a complex web of major allegations, having detrimental effects on his career and personal life. Is this what happens when a trooper finds out you have intimate relations with his ex-fiance? This case challenges the very fabric of justice.

The victim’s statement, a crucial piece of evidence, narrates an aggressive encounter on the highway, but a closer examination suggests a deeper layer to this story. ‘I reasoned that the driver might have misunderstood my actions, thinking that I was tailgating him, unaware of the vehicle behind me that was boxing me in,’ Page recounts the moment of the alleged aggression. His detailed perspective sheds light on an unexpected highway altercation, where he found himself pursued, subjected to aggressive gestures and tailgated that continued for almost 11 miles.

As we scrutinize the police reports, a series of discrepancies emerge, raising concerns about the validity of the evidence presented. From issues in the victim’s statement, suspect identification, the trooper’s conflicting testimony, to the questionable handling of evidence, this case poses more questions than answers.

Quotes extracted from the police reports paint a picture of a rushed investigation, where even one trooper who searched the suspect’s vehicle failed to submit a report, and crucial evidence was overlooked. How did law enforcement secure a search warrant? What gaps exist in the chain of custody for the evidence collected? How did troopers know Page would be at his girlfriend’s house, almost two counties away? Why did Trooper Wallner, ex-fiance of Page’s girlfriend, continuously call her throughout the entire incident updating her about what was happening? These are just a few of the burning questions that demand answers.

“I recognized that this may be a personal attack orchestrated by certain troopers,” suggests Page, revealing a potential motive that goes beyond the surface. As we navigate through the twists and turns of this narrative, the sympathy for Page grows, leaving audiences questioning the actions of those sworn to uphold justice.

Furthermore, Page was charged with a crime he’s not even legally eligible for, as per the very definition of the law. This case challenges the very notion of justice, and we invite you to join us in uncovering the truth.

Stay tuned for our comprehensive article, where we will dissect each aspect of this case, exploring the contradictions, analyzing the evidence, and providing a platform for the truth to emerge. Links to all the reports in the case will be included, allowing you to scrutinize the facts and form your own conclusions.

“This Is Going To Be A Tricky One”

In the realm of law enforcement, certain phrases from an officer may cause unease, especially when you’re the Supervisor. Unfortunately, this scenario happens more often than you might think. It’s the moment when an officer realizes they made a mistake, possibly violating someone’s rights. Seeking a way out to avoid trouble, the officer turns to the Supervisor, similar to a student seeking refuge with their parents after a school transgression. This reality is disheartening — the individuals entrusted with enforcing the law not only lack comprehensive legal knowledge, as explained in my previous article, “Behind the Badge: The Unseen Impact of Legal Complexity on Your Freedom,” but when faced with errors, their instinct is to conceal rather than rectify.

Regrettably, officers may exploit legal intricacies to shield themselves. An example is in traffic stops, where, out of 1162 pages of laws, an officer can find a minor vehicular infraction to justify their initial error. A proficient Supervisor, if commendable, will adeptly navigate these complexities to rectify the situation discreetly, leaving the individual unaware of the initial mistake. Whether a routine traffic stop or a more significant encounter, the consequences may range from unwarranted fines to jeopardizing one’s freedom.

To shield oneself from such predicaments, meticulous documentation becomes paramount. Every detail must be recorded and articulated with clarity and courtesy. Verbalizing concerns audibly during interactions can disconcert officers, fostering a heightened awareness of adherence to correct procedures. Confidence in recording interactions dissuades discomfort and ensures a focused demeanor.

Despite the prevalence of body cameras, their deployment is not universal across all departments. Even when mandated, accountability often falters, with lapses in adherence to policies and procedures. Internal affairs investigations, devoid of substantive outcomes, serve as a mere façade of accountability.

When faced with unjust charges, the reliance on body camera footage may prove futile due to intentional lapses or selective submissions. The realization that crucial evidence has been compromised leaves individuals facing legal repercussions in a state of despair. This unsettling experience, having been on both sides, underscores the importance of proactive measures.

The proactive individual who consistently records interactions is spared from such tribulations. Regardless of anticipation of legal entanglements, recording serves as a protective measure. In a society governed by an extensive legal framework, the likelihood of law enforcement errors is considerable. Recording interactions becomes a safeguard, offering clarity and protection.

In conclusion, irrespective of guilt or the intention to interact with law enforcement, the imperative remains — record everything. Mistakes are inevitable, and the ubiquity of law enforcement interactions heightens the likelihood of errors. Safeguard your well-being in this legal landscape by meticulous documentation and maintaining a respectful demeanor. The recording becomes a formidable ally, providing an unaltered account of events, offering the best chance for survival in the face of legal scrutiny. Stay vigilant and stay secure.

Law Enforcement Realities: Unveiling Officers Mistakes. was originally published in Law Secrets Insider on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

In case you’re not aware, the 2024 Edition of the Vehicle and Traffic Law of the State of New York book alone comprises 1162 pages. This is just one among many lawbooks, including penal law, criminal procedure, and ABC law, that police officers are expected to know. The sheer volume of thousands of pages filled with intricate laws is overwhelming and impractical for law enforcement. Yet, their job, and subsequently, your life, hinge on the knowledge within these pages. It’s not practical, and many might overlook the significance until they find themselves in the back of a police car due to officers’ unawareness of the laws they’re trying to enforce.

Most people believe they won’t encounter law enforcement, and while they may be right, the repercussions if they do far outweigh the chances of ever having such an encounter.

If we agree that it’s not practical for law enforcement to know every law, it’s fair to say the average citizen can’t be expected to be aware of these laws and the procedures either. So what’s the solution? Hiring someone to explain these laws is an option, but here lies the problem — they too are part of the system. Having blind faith in someone else, especially regarding your freedom, can have detrimental effects on your life. It’s not reasonable to believe that an officer, a citizen, or even a legal aide can possess knowledge of thousands of laws, and the same goes for the judges handling the cases.

This creates a systemic issue where the overwhelming workload of laws and procedural handling makes it unsafe for people to exist freely. So, what happens? Do police officers just do as they please? No. They deal with a consistent stream of common calls, becoming well-versed in the required laws and the wording necessary for reports. Complacency, coupled with the rarity of going to trial, allows officers to manipulate report wording or omit crucial information since most cases result in plea deals. Shockingly, as of 2019, 96% of felony convictions and 99% of misdemeanor convictions in New York State were the result of guilty pleas.

If we don’t expect the system or people to know all the laws, and police seldom expect cases to go to trial due to the high rate of plea deals, where is justice? What we have is ignorance until the day something happens to you, and a piece of paper alleges you violated one of those thousands of laws. Your life will change completely, and blind faith in the system won’t necessarily guarantee justice.

Join me on a journey where I share common techniques used every day against the people. I’ll guide you on how to handle yourself when in contact with the law, as it significantly impacts your chances of retaining your freedom. Learn that the ‘discretion’ officers have is more influential than you might think, and how you interact with them can determine your fate. My goal is to improve the odds for you and everyone else.

~ Ryder David

Behind the Badge: The Unseen Impact of Legal Complexity on Your Freedom was originally published in Law Secrets Insider on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
