Maybe you’re not where you thought you would be at this point in your career, or you’re not improving in an area of your work. Reflecting on the past five or 10 years, it may seem like you haven’t gotten anywhere, making it more difficult to try and map out your future.

Unfortunately, often people spend their lives aimlessly drifting between one job and another while trying to catch up on what they can do better. Setting SMART goals can help you focus on your goals and improve your chances of reaching them.

SMART is an acronym that can serve as a guide to goal-setting.

Your goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. These goals should be aligned with your values and objectives.

Let’s break down each step of the SMART method of goal setting.

Specific

Make sure your goal is clear and specific so that you can focus on it and feel motivated to reach it. Ask yourself questions such as what do I want to accomplish? Why? Who will be involved? What resources and limits do I have?

Measurable

Having measurable goals can help you stay motivated and keep track of your progress. It can also help you meet your deadlines and feel excited about reaching your objective. When setting a measurable goal, you must address how much, how many, and how you will know when I’ve succeeded.

Achievable

Your goal should also be realistic and achievable, so it can still be reached. Setting an achievable goal can help you identify potential opportunities that you may not have considered.

When ensuring that you’re setting a SMART goal, ask yourself, how will I accomplish this? Is it realistic?

Relevant

This step is about ensuring that the goal you’re setting is relevant to you and can be reached. It’s imperative to remember that while you may need help reaching your objectives, you are still responsible for your own success.

Relevant goals are ones in which you can answer yes to the following questions:

Is the time right?

Is the goal worthwhile?

Am I capable of reaching this goal?

Is it relevant/applicable to the current environment?

Time-Bound

Another critical factor that you should consider when setting a SMART goal is the target date. This will help keep you focused on the long-term goals and prevent other tasks from taking priority.

When? What can I accomplish six weeks from now? What about six months from now?

The SMART goal-setting method can help you achieve your goals and motivate you to reach them. Furthermore, SMART goals force you to set a completion date and define your objectives.

Originally published on Brandi Stephens’ website.

There’s so much to do! Whether you’re getting ready for a trip, shopping for relatives, or organizing an office party; chances are you’re busy. It can be hard to keep track of all of these activities; however, it is crucial to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Unfortunately, the holiday season can be very disruptive to work. Trying to keep track of everything going on can lead to a loss of productivity. In addition, the season is one of the biggest vacation periods of the year, which can lead to limited supervision and oversight in the workplace.

If you’re having difficulty focusing on your work, these strategies can help you get back to doing what you need to do.

Don’t Bring Your Personal Responsibilities to Work.

One of the biggest workplace distractions during the holiday season can be personal errands. It’s hard to keep track of everything you need to do, both professionally and personally, so it’s important to separate the two. Plan ahead and avoid handling any personal responsibilities during your work hours. Instead, take a day or two off to prepare for the festivities.

Don’t Multitask.

Even if you can, it’s not necessarily a good idea to work on multiple projects at the same time. Instead, take a step back and figure out what should be prioritized. Doing so will allow you to finish tasks and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Do Organize Tasks.

To keep track of your work-related to-do lists and your personal holiday obligations, create a comprehensive list by drawing up two columns and writing down each of the various tasks you must complete. Having a list will help keep you focused on the important tasks at hand.

Do Limit Distractions.

It’s the time of year when you’re most likely daydreaming about the holiday party or planning on getting to your son’s winter music event on time. The holidays can be a time of both excitement and stress, preventing you from focusing on your work. One of the best ways to keep yourself focused on your tasks is to limit your activities.

One of the most important steps that you can take to keep yourself focused on your work is to limit distractions such as texts and emails. This can be done by setting aside a specific time to open and check your inbox daily. If you’re worried you might miss important clients or managers, try setting up desktop alerts.

Do Ask Family and Friends to Respect Your Working Hours.

To ensure that you’re focused on your work, refrain from using mobile devices and email if it’s not necessary. During the holidays, your phone and text messages can get more frequent.

You should place your phone in your desk drawer until after work and ask your relatives to refrain from calling and texting you while you’re in the office. Explain to them that it could hurt your professional image and distract you from your tasks. Setting boundaries is important to maintain a positive work environment.

Furthermore, you should refrain from using social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter during office hours. Set aside daily time to respond to and update your feeds if you must.

You might be tempted to say yes to everything, but remember that doing may cost your sanity. The holidays are a wonderful time of year; you should make the most of it by acknowledging your obligations and planning accordingly.

Originally published on Brandi Stephens’ website.

Across industries, people’s way of life was disrupted. However, it also gave us an opportunity to rethink and rebuild. Many organizations were forced to change their management styles, which encouraged more innovation and creativity.

We live in a digital age where, within seconds, people can access and share information worldwide. Furthermore, popular shows such as Shark Tank provide people a platform to pitch their ideas to experienced professionals, with the opportunity to gain investors. It’s no surprise that people are starting to feel anything is possible.

To create something tangible, one has to bridge the gap between an idea and reality. This can be done by using conflicting mindsets, such as pragmatism and optimism. There are no magic solutions to achieving what may seem impossible, but there are simple processes that can help you get the most out of your ideas.

Your first step in convincing yourself is to break free from your limiting beliefs. It’s natural to base our beliefs on impracticalities and assumptions as we try to understand the world around us. When we believe we have a great idea, we tend to sabotage our efforts and prevent ourselves from developing it. This is why it’s important to release these limiting beliefs first.

Phrases like “if it were easy, everyone would do it” is relevant here. However, when you challenge your assumptions and set realistic goals, you can develop an action plan. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.

The second step is to build a solid team. The biggest breakthroughs throughout history have tended to happen when a group of people were willing to work together.

Before you start building a team, you must identify the various characteristics of your team members. This will allow you to identify the strengths of each individual and make an informed decision regarding their role.

While staying grounded in your values, encourage diverse views and ensure that everyone on the team knows that all ideas are welcome. You should listen to dissent by creating a safe environment for critical analysis and discussion. This is very important for any company as it allows employees to develop their best ideas and improve their overall performance.

Once you’ve built a team and started brainstorming, the third step is to use that feedback!

Critical thinking is vital as you gather other people’s thoughts and opinions. Having devil’s advocates on your team can be very helpful as they can provide you with valuable insight and develop new perspectives. Listen to what everyone has to say.

Even if your idea seems unlikely, it will ultimately come down to your willingness to work and the process you utilize. Follow up on a “what if?” with a “here’s how.” This will allow you to develop a strategy and implement the necessary steps to make the most of your ideas.

Originally published on Brandi Stephens’ website.

The most successful of these leaders have been sensitive to the concerns of their employees, and many have shared their own vulnerabilities with the public.

Good leadership requires empathy; however, too much of it can be a burden. Instead of carrying that burden, leaders must learn to experience the uplifting feeling of compassion. This is a huge shift in how leaders interact with their teams and benefits everyone. The first step in this process is understanding compassion and empathy.

There are various definitions of compassion and empathy, and they can be used interchangeably. However, they don’t necessarily refer to the same experience. The two qualities of compassion are the willingness to help those in need and the understanding of what others are going through.

We reach a level of empathy when we can feel the other person’s experience. This type of psychological understanding allows us to take on the other person’s emotions and make our own. Although doing something nice may seem noble, it doesn’t necessarily help the other person.

According to Paul Polman, the former CEO of Unilever, if he were to lead with empathy, he would never be able to make a decision. As much as we’ve come to understand the importance of empathy in leadership, is it misserving people as a poor guide?

Although empathy can help us do the right thing, it can also motivate us to do the wrong thing. According to a study by Paul Bloom, a psychology professor at Yale, empathy can distort our judgment.

While it’s important to avoid being too sensitive to the feelings of others, it’s also important to remember that being able to connect with people is imperative for leadership. Without empathy, a leader will not be able to lead effectively.

Most leaders tend to get trapped in their own empathy, which makes them unable to move toward compassion. Instead, there must be a shift from getting caught up in empathy and understanding how to lead with compassion.

If you’re with someone who is suffering, avoid getting caught in an emotional hijack. Instead, try taking a mental and emotional step away to understand the situation better. Doing so will allow you to truly help the person. Although you may feel like you’re being unfair, remember that you’re not stepping away from the person; instead, you’re stepping outside the situation to help them solve their problem.

Instead of trying to solve people’s problems, leadership should be about developing and growing people so they’re equipped with the necessary problem-solving skills. This is done by providing them with the necessary resources and opportunities for growth. Instead of trying to solve their own issues, try giving them a coaching opportunity.

When you first ask the person what they need, you’re initiating a solution by giving them an opportunity to think about what they need. This will allow you to understand better how you can help. The first step in helping a person is to make them feel heard and seen.

One of the best ways for leaders to improve their compassion is to practice authentic self-care. Managing one’s emotions can be very challenging, especially when dealing with other people’s feelings. This is why it’s important for leaders to practice taking breaks, eating well, and sleeping well. When we take care of ourselves, we’re better suited to take care of others.

Staying grounded, resilient, and in tune with oneself is essential. When people show these qualities in their daily lives, others will feel more comfortable asking for help, and leaders will be better able to provide support.

This is detrimental to their growth and leads to complacency, which is the enemy of any competent business person. One of the easiest ways to avoid this is by having mentors.

A mentor is someone who their mentee develops both personally and professionally. He or she is a non-judgmental individual who will listen to their ideas and help them to formulate an effective plan to reach their goals, whatever they may be. A mentor helps us grow faster because they show us a clear path to success. Similar to climbing a mountain, a mentor, like a sherpa, helps you reach your next peak.

According to Jim Rohn, an entrepreneur, people should avoid taking the casual approach to life. Instead, they should seek individuals who can help them reach their goals and greatness in their field.

Mentors are excellent sources of wisdom. Even if there isn’t a specific individual you meet regularly, many people are being casually mentored without realizing it. Whether podcasts, books, or TED talks, there are positive influences and inspirations everywhere. A mentor can be anyone willing to give you their free time and resources.

Before you start looking for a mentor, make sure that you identify the individuals who you trust and admire. You can also ask them to give you a call. For instance, if you are looking for advice, ask if they can give you a couple of minutes of their time a month to talk about your goals. For a mentorship to be successful, the mentor and mentee’s values should align. There should be clear expectations and frequent check-ins to track progress.

Getting advice from a mentor can sometimes feel like talking to yourself out loud about a problem, just to realize at the end that you’ve begun to solve the problem. Mentors are there to bounce ideas off of. They can help us develop new perspectives and ideas through their neutral mindset. They can also help us keep moving at the right speed.

Today, graduating from college is different. Due to the lack of job opportunities and the increasing number of students entering the job market, many new graduates cannot find a good job. Having a mentor can help them accelerate their search and avoid decisions they’ll regret later.

The benefits of mentorship are well-documented. According to a study conducted by SAP HR Research, the correlation between the career outcomes of employees who have been mentored versus those who have not been mentored is strong. The study’s results revealed that those mentored receive higher compensation, are more likely to believe that they will be promoted, and are more likely to feel satisfied with their current job. Furthermore, 76% of the respondents believe having a mentor is crucial to their success.

Consider reaching out to an esteemed colleague and asking if they’re interested in mentoring. It can help you develop your skills and improve overall performance in your role. A successful mentorship is a powerful thing!

Originally published on Brandi Stephens’ website.

Job interviews provide an opportunity to display your qualifications and leave a lasting impression on the hiring team. It can be overwhelming, however, there are a few things you can do to perform at your absolute best on the day of the interview.

So how do you ace your next job interview?

Before you meet with the hiring team, take the time to prepare for the interview. This will allow you to think about the various topics that will be covered and come up with a solid outline of how you’ll respond to questions. You should also include strategies that will help you stand out from the crowd and make the hiring team feel more positive about you.

It’s important that you thoroughly research the company that you’re applying to in order to gain a deeper understanding of its mission, goals, and culture. Before you start searching the company’s website, browse through its history and recent announcements. Then, keep checking back for updates about its achievements and future goals.

On Indeed Company pages, you can browse through various job listings and reviews. Doing this will allow you to contextualize your answers and make an informed decision when it comes to the interview. Having a deeper understanding of the company will additionally allow you to easily connect with its goals and achievements. Furthermore, it can help you to avoid applying to an organization that isn’t aligned with your personal values.

Although you may talk about job-specific topics during the interview, most of the time, the interview will also feature a few standard questions. Prepare by practicing answering probable interview questions.

Most job interviews feature behavioral questions that are designed to assess how candidates handle certain situations. To prepare for these questions, you should learn about the SMART method, which involves talking about the situation, the task, and the result. Before you start talking about the topic, make sure that you have a clear understanding of the context of the situation. Then, consider how you would handle the issue to reach the desired result.

Before you meet with the hiring team, make sure that you dress appropriately. To avoid getting caught off-guard, try reviewing the company’s social media and website for employee dress codes. In most cases, a business casual or formal suit will work best.

Although most job interviews feature a lot of questions, most candidates are expected to show their interest in the company by answering informed questions. To prepare for these questions, try thinking about what you’re interested in learning about the organization and its culture. Have a few good questions to ask when the time comes.

It is imperative that you think about why you actually want the position you’re applying for. Hiring teams want to determine if you’d be a good fit, so don’t be unprepared to explain why you want the job. Additionally, have a firm understanding of what your strengths and weaknesses are. When answering questions, make a point to emphasize your experience, skills, and accomplishments. Your work history and skill level should align with the goals of the prospective employer.

Finally, remember to follow up! After the interview, make the extra effort of following up to increase your chances of getting the job. Consider sending an email to the hiring manager to thank them for their time. In addition to expressing your appreciation for the interview, you can also let them know that you’re still interested in the position.

Originally published on Brandi Stephen’s website.
