This weeks topic, geometric shapes & patterns, took me waaaaay longer than expected to organize my head around.. It may be because of the overwhelming love I have for geometric stuff, which led to the overwhelming amount of photos I had to pare back on. Or maybe I was having an off week and couldn’t write. I’ll never know. But ALAS!! I finally pulled it together!

So here we go…geometric shapes and patterns! Geometric can be a theme in itself, or designed to subtly blend into a larger theme. Let’s start with how to work it into….

1. Event Decor

Hanging geometric shapes are so versatile when it comes to event decor. The feel of the shapes can be tailored to the surrounding look by changing the color of the shapes themselves, the color of the tie suspending the shapes and weaving coordinating greenery and/or flowers thru the frame.

For an event sign with a focus on the geometric, use a geometric framed tray or mirror like the one above. To blend a shape like that into an existing theme, weave flowers and/or greenery through the frame to hide the sharp angles.

Geometric lighting and chandeliers are everything to me. The rise in industrial event venues is ideal for pieces like this, as the ceilings generally have the exposed beams to hang things and the wiring to plug everything in. Hang evenly spaced chandeliers along a family style table, or hang a bunch above the dance floor. They’re AMAZING on their own, but highly adaptable to different themes if you want to weave detail pieces thru them, like florals, greenery or crystals.

If your event isn't large scale enough for a chandelier, 3D geometric shapes, made out of card stock, are another fun (and low cost) way to add that geometric pop to your party.

Strung as garland or scattered on food/drink/dessert tables, they’re super cute detail pieces. Try different types of paper for different looks, including pastels, glitter, metallic and varying textures. (side note: don’t be discouraged when you throw your tape, stacks of paper and dignity across the room while teaching yourself how to fold and tape these gems together.. it’s part of the process..)

Think fun colorful outdoor kids birthday or graduation party, like the event below:

And the shapes don’t have to be 3D to make an impact! With the right mix of colors and shapes, your run of the mill flat shapes are just as effective:

Now onto the plate situation. Plain white paper plates are for the BIRDS! It is SO easy to step your party game up, just by stepping your plate game up. Fun shapes and colors, like the plates below, bring life to a table!

And sometimes you don’t find the plates, the plates find YOU. If you fall in love with a specific style or color, buy the plates first and build your decor around the tableware. And the best part? Awesome event style without the very UNawesome washing of a billion dishes. But definitely recycle! Because we need the earth to not die.

However, if you plan on having a constant rotation of summer guests and have a few extra bucks to spend on reusable decor, there are plenty of porcelain and melamine options as well:

And for all the stuff you want to buy for yourself but don’t have the room for.. gifts for the people you love! Next time you bring someone flowers, arrive with them already arranged in a unique, yet adaptable to any decor (think solid colors or clear glass) vase.

Agate slices, geodes, quartz and the rest of the natural stone/mineral crew, have been a part of my designs since I started my company. Agate slices in particular have been a huge hit as place cards.

With the summer events upon us, my studio looks like a mining cave exploded in it. So with all of the inventory currently in my face, it’s the perfect time to show you guys some ways to use it!

1. Event Decor

The possibilities are ENDLESS when it comes to natural stone and mineral place cards! When we create these, we spend a lot of time tweaking them to fit perfectly into the surrounding tablescape. That means that menu design and fonts, along with tablescape florals, silverware and linen colors, are all taken into account when choosing the final design.

And slices arent the only styles that are easy to incorporate. Large agate book ends can be turned into unique table number holders:

2. Home Decor

When I come across unique agate slices, I have a habit of buying them for myself. It was during my last studio cleaning that I decided I had to do SOMETHING with the stack of blue agate sitting on the corner of my desk. We had an unused shadowbox frame sitting around, so I attached the agate slices to a piece of mat board, popped it into the frame and hung it in our kitchen!

And you don’t have to become an agate hoarder to create a frame like that. Natural stone coasters are everywhere right now. If you come across a coaster set that you love, but never use coasters, you can re-purpose them and create a hanging frame piece.

Every once in awhile we also add polished coasters to a tablescape that is missing something. The three styles below are the most commonly used in situations like that:

Stone accent pieces are another way to incorporate sparkly rocks into your home decor. The pieces below are the perfect addition to a bookshelf that needs a pop of rock!

3. Gifts

And last but not least, gifts! All of the items in the home decor section are awesome gifts, but another way to incorporate them is to turn them into gift tags. A lot of the agate slices have holes in the middle, which makes them hard to use as place cards, but PERFECT to slip a ribbon through and use as gift tags.

I used to swing between wearing silver and gold, but neither ever felt quite right. It wasn't until rose gold hit the scene that I found the jewelry color love of my life. This isn’t a new style but its something that joined the ranks of the ever present silver and gold. Think of it as their long lost sibling who randomly showed up at the door with a suitcase and is moving in….forever.

Rose gold is a subtle but constant presence in my life, from my engagement ring to the tag on our dogs collar. Let’s check out some ways to incorporate this beauty into your life..

1. Event Decor

There’s something about the clean hard lines of white marble against the soft glow of rose gold that makes this the cake stand of my dreams. So much so, that it sits on my kitchen island at all times and has held far more vases of flowers than cakes. The stand above is from Homegoods, which means if you’re looking for it, they wont have it, and the moment you’ve moved on or bought it somewhere else, they’ll have an entire display of it. You can find something similar at David Jones, or google variations of ‘rose gold marble cake stand’ and stalk out the one of YOUR dreams ❤ .

Rose gold silverware is popping up at events everywhere. It’s tough to find in stores, so I suggest going directly to Berglander or Cambridge, which are the two brands that I use the most.

2. Home Decor

Vases, flower pots and mugs are another great way to incorporate unique pops of rose gold. Those geometric vases get compliments every time I use them, Fofie & Mia’s is the best home store in Westchester (definitely check them out if you’re local) so obviously they have the best Moscow mule mugs, and the Weaver Gardens crew keeps an awesome variety of flower pots (and flowers to plant in the pots) in stock.

3. Gifts

I legitimately not only own all of the stuff above, I’ve also given each of them as gifts to my favorite people. I mailed my mom the Bryan Anthony’s earrings in gold (I have a rose gold pair) for Mothers Day and Sam, my partna in design, and I both wear the tribe necklace, hers in gold, mine in.. you guessed it! Rose gold! And for those papers in the middle, Paper Source always has a variety of those large sheets, which I use as Instagram photo backdrops and/or wrapping paper!

1. Event Decor

I hosted Easter lunch for my family this year, which was the perfect opportunity to incorporate one of the many fern design ideas I have bouncing around my head. The ferns, which I was able to buy and transfer to ceramic pots a week before the event, replaced fresh cut centerpiece flowers and took one task off my day before to-do list. The potted ferns also doubled as gifts, when each guest got to pick one out to take home before they left.

Pick up a hanging planter and fern it up! One of the awesome things about ferns is the variety. There are so many styles and shapes of fern leaves, that theres something for almost everyone!

If you're not into hanging plants, go for your run of the mill potted plants! Pick up some ferns from a local nursery, a few ceramic pots that you really love (my favorite retail stores for this are at home, Pier 1 and Homegoods) and a bag of potting soil.

This fern pitcher from Pier 1, with its delicate watercolor whisp, is another way to incorporate a little bit of fern into your life. I saw this pitcher a few weeks ago, didn’t buy it, couldn’t stop thinking about and finally went back to get it. Which is how this little cutie patootie came to be a piece I use as a vase for fresh flowers/a pitcher to water my indoor plants.

As a creator of custom event decor, I spend a lot of time wandering around wholesalers showrooms. I see upcoming trends before they hit the retail shelves, so I use the trips as a way to develop ideas before the requests roll in. It also begins to pop up in my personal life, so I decided to start putting ideas on paper, of how to incorporate any trend you love into everyday use! I’ll touch on 3–4 ways to use a specific trend per article, including event decor, home decor, clothing and gifts. First up, the palm leaf!

They. Are. EVERYWHERE. Palm leaves are the new succulent, and there are a few key ways to incorporate them into an event or everyday use. First, if you don’t want to purchase real live palm leaves, don’t waste money on the obviously fake looking stuff. If you aren’t pushing your finger into the leaf and saying, “I can’t believe this is FAKE!”, then put it down and walk away. There’s a VERY fine line between cheesy and elegant. Second, you don’t have to go overboard with it. Little pops of palm leaf pattern or accents can enhance a look. On the other hand, using palm leaves as plate chargers, on a palm patterned tablecloth covered in vases filled with palm, all at the same table, is aggressive.

So lets jump into ways to incorporate it!

Whether you’re holding a large event at a venue or having a few friends over for dinner, pops of palm bring a breath of fresh air to your spring table. Try a dried sun palm leaf accent next to the plate to give it a tropical look:

Or a live monstera palm leaf (this one is from the wonderful Meghan at Weaver Gardens ♡) on top of the place setting as a name card, with the name directly on the leaf in calligraphy or printed on a piece of vellum paper:

This sports bra from Targets JoyLab line is the perfect little pop. Throw it on for the gym, or wear it as a shirt under a pair of overalls. And it’s only $19.99!

Be still my HEART! I saw this rug in the recent issue of HGTV magazine and knew the moment of palm had officially begun. This palm leaf bath mat from Urban Outfitters is everything to me. Not only is the color rich and vibrant, the pattern is bold.. yet simple, which stands out against the myraid of busy and aggressive palm patterns I’ve seen.
