Learning to fish is easy once anglers have some basic knowledge. Texas Parks and Wildlife offers anglers tips on luring in that perfect bass fish. The best time to catch these fish occurs during the fall, winter, and spring months, and anglers should fish in shallow water. Additional fishing advice includes:

- Use common freshwater baits. Crickets and grasshoppers are perfect choices to catch bass, sunfish, and catfish. Anglers should use a medium-sized hook for bass and catfish and make sure the hood is completely covered. This can increase nibbles on the line.

- Hold the bass by the jaw once caught. Bass have sharp fins and teeth that can cut anglers if not held correctly. If the bass is larger than three pounds, anglers should support the fish’s body with their other hand.

- Know the slot limit. For freshwater fishing, anglers must release fish within the slot limit numbers. If the lake has a 14- through 21-inch slot limit, they must release the bass if it is between 14 and 21 inches long. For saltwater fishing, slot limits mean they can keep any fish between the slot limits. It’s the opposite of the freshwater fishing.
