By Prem Acharya

The beta of Apple Intelligence (AI) arrives this fall in Beta. The new update will bring many new features to the iPhone 15 Pro series. Here are three different features to be excited about.

Improvements to Emailing

Apple Intelligence will bring many new features to help aid users in their email writing. The ability to rewrite an email to different tones, proofread an email for grammar errors, and summarize different sections of an email into bullet points, will all be provided to you with the release of Apple Intelligence. These features will make the process of writing emails more simple by reducing the time it takes to write and reread an email before sending it. For those who find writing emails difficult, these features will greatly enhance their experience.

Improvements to Siri

Have you ever found Siri to be a little, unintelligent. All is about to change when Siri will be able to access OpenAI’s ChatGPT to answer the many different questions that you may ask. Accessing ChatGPT will allow Siri to answer a magnitude of questions with greater depth than ever before. One example that Apple displayed was Siri’s ability to give a user a recipe using ingredients from their garden. You can now include photos with the questions you ask Siri. For example, if you have a couple ingredients lying around, you could take a picture of your ingredients and ask Siri recipes that can be made using your ingredients. Also you will be able to type out your questions as well.

This isn’t the only new feature that Siri will be capable of. Siri will now have enhanced language understanding for when users change what they are saying in the middle of a sentence. This will be great for when you may click Siri while still thinking about your question. But wait, there is more, much more. Siri will now have onscreen awareness, personal context awareness, product knowledge, and much more. Apple Intelligence is going to bring great change to Siri, hopefully allowing it to be of more routine use.

Audio Transcription

Apple will now provide automatic audio transcriptions with Apple Intelligence. This will give you the ability to have your words translated to writing almost instantaneously as you speak. This will be great for meetings or when you don’t feel like writing down your ideas. You will also be able to record calls now with an audio transcription and a summary of the call. Apple may be playing catch-up here with companies like Google, however, these features are bound to be very useful for many of its users.

Conclusion

Apple Intelligence will change the way that user’s interact with their iPhones. The features that it provides will provide many quality of life improvements, especially with Siri. Siri will become more useful for almost all the questions that you may have. In conclusion, this is just the beginning of Apple’s integration of AI into their products and AI will fundamentally change the way we interact with Apple products.

Thanks

Thank you for reading this article!

By Prem Acharya

Apple recently announced a new line of iPhones, the iPhone 15 series and 15 Pro series. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus appear to possess many new features this year. What are the new features and should iPhone users upgrade?

Photo of the new iPhone 15 series and color variations. Credits to Apple.

Dynamic island

The biggest change to this year’s new line of iPhones is the addition of the dynamic island to all of the new models. Previously, the dynamic island was just a feature of the pro models, but Apple has now added it to the base models. The dynamic island, the black cut-out at the top of the screen, adds more screen real-estate and software features. Many apps utilize the feature as a second screen or pop-up. For example, Apple maps uses the island to show directions to a location as seen below.

Credits to Apple.

Overall, the dynamic island presides as perhaps one of the most major changes to the new iPhone 15, however, there are also many other new features.

USB-C

All of the new iPhones have now changed from the lightning port to USB-C! For most people this is an exciting change as it allows users to use the same cord to charge many of their devices. For example, MacBooks, iPads, and most other modern technology devices use USB-C as a charger. This change has the effect of making charging your phone easier as you will be able to use one cord to charge most devices instead of lightning for just the iPhone.

Other Hardware Updates

It wouldn’t be a new iPhone without changes to the camera! The camera now has a 48-megapixel main camera with a quad-pixel sensor which captures photos mostly at 24-megapixels. The camera updates allow for crisper and more vibrant images and support for 2x telephoto zoom.

The iPhone 15 features major updates to the camera. Credits to Apple.

The iPhone 15 now includes the A16 Bionic chip from the iPhone 14 Pro series. This chip has many improvements over last year’s A15 chip as the A16 uses 20 percent less power while still delivering better performance than the A15 chip. With no surprise, the iPhone 15 is faster than the iPhone 14.

The screen on the iPhone 15 can now reach up to 2000 nits of brightness when outdoors! Previously, the iPhone 14 could only reach up to only 1200 nits of brightness when outdoors. The higher amount of nits of brightness on the 15 will allow the iPhone screen to be nearly as clear outside as inside, even with the sun beaming on the screen. Otherwise, the screen has mostly stayed the same with the excellent Super Retina XDR display.

To clear things up, the iPhone 15 does not include a titanium body, only the Pro series feature it. The iPhone 15 still features the same aluminum body, but, the back glass is now matte which will allow for less finger prints to show. Also, the colors featured on the 15 are pink, yellow, green, black, and blue. The colors are very light and pastel-like creating a more vibrant look.

Should you buy the iPhone 15?

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus retail at the same price as last year, $799 and $899. So who is this new iPhone for? Well, if you are reading this then there is a good chance you are interested in upgrading, so i’m just going to give you my blatant recommendations. If your iPhone is an 11 series or older, than the new iPhone 15 is a guaranteed great upgrade. Not only is the feel of the phone different from the 11 and below, it is also four generations newer and the performance is undoubtedly faster. If you have an iPhone 12, than an upgrade could be nice for battery purposes and screen purposes. While the iPhone 15 is obviously faster than the 12, the 12 is already so fast the change in performance might not be as noticeable. But, if your phone is not performing as well as before or the battery is draining, than an upgrade will be well worth it. Lastly, if you own a iPhone 13 or 14, than it is my recommendation that an upgrade is not necessary at all. But, the dynamic island does provide a nice new feature previously not seen on the regular series of iPhones. So, if you upgrade every year, your iPhone isn’t working as well as before, or you don’t mind spending a couple of hundred dollars on a new iPhone, than upgrading could definitely be worth it. But, it is by no means necessary at all, in fact, I would personally wait at least another year to upgrade if I were in that situation.

Conclusion

Overall, the iPhone 15 is one of the best updates to the regular series of iPhones in years! But, there is nothing necessarily ground-breaking or new about the iPhone 15 as many of the new features have just been copy and pasted from the iPhone 14 Pro series. In conclusion, the iPhone 15 has many great changes and features, but nothing too ground-breaking to warrant an upgrade from everyone.

Thanks

Thank you for reading this article!

By Prem Acharya

With recent advancements in generative Artificial Intelligence (like ChatGPT), many important questions about the use of such technology have arisen among governments and more. But, one place where the effect of this technology is already visible, is in education. This leads to the question, what are the implications of A.I. on education?

Generative A.I. model ChatGPT created many questions and concerns regarding A.I. with its launch in November of 2022.

Introduction

When the internet first rose in popularity in the mid-80s, many important questions and concerns were asked similar to that of the current questions surrounding Artificial Intelligence in education. Many of these concerns involved students ability to look up answers on the internet. But teachers adapted and now almost all schools use technology to enhance their students education.

Cheating

Many concerns surrounding A.I. are different than those of the internet. For example, instead of students being able to look up ideas for an essay, students can use tools like ChatGPT to write their entire essay. For teachers this is a huge issue as the technology used is almost entirely human-like. To combat this, it is very likely that teachers will assign more in-class writing rather than at-home essay’s to ensure that their students cannot cheat. This is going to be a major shift in the way that teachers approach teaching and testing just like when changes needed to be made in education due to the internet. Cheating is the most popular issue regarding A.I. and education, but, not all the effects of A.I. are negative.

Tutoring

Studies show that one-on-one tutoring greatly accelerates a students ability to learn. With this in-mind, Sal Khan created the popular non-profit Khan Academy in 2008. Khan’s goal is to provide a world class education for all through his platform. At the time of writing, more than 135 million people around the world use Khan Academy. Khan, recently found a new way to reach his ambitious goal through using Artificial Intelligence. The program currently uses OpenAI’s software and is named Khanmigo. It can be used to be a one-on-one tutor through Khan Academy. Though Khanmigo is in its testing stages and can only be used with a donation, Khan hopes to make it free in the near future. Khan believes that Khanmigo could be revolutionary in improving students ability to learn and have access to learning all over the world due to its teacher-like abilities.

Khanmigo logo from Khan Academy

Conclusion

The rise of Artificial Intelligence is sure to affect the educational system. With this in mind, it will be necessary for all teachers and systems to adapt to the ways in which students will use Artificial Intelligence. But not all of what A.I. presents to education will be negative, in possibility it could bring more positives than negative. A.I. could allow students to reach their full potential with programs like Khanmigo and other future applications. In the near future, it is very possible that A.I. will a normal part of education just like the internet is today.

By Prem Acharya

At the most recent Apple event, Apple announced the brand new line of iPhones. But, with this new line of phones comes the biggest difference between the iPhone Pro and the regular iPhone in a while. So, should iPhone users upgrade, and if so, which phone should they choose?

Photo of the new iPhone 14 Pro. Credits to Apple.

If you are an iPhone user and saw the photo above and were perplexed by the absence of the old, bigger notch, then you might also be suprised and possibly dissapointed to know that this is only on the Pro line of the new iPhone 14 models. This is just one of the many huge differences from the base to Pro models.

The Screens

The screens on the iPhones this year reveal the biggest difference between the Pro and base iPhones. This year the Pro iPhones feature the dynamic island on the screen instead of the notch which is featured on the base models. The new dynamic island allows for more of the screen to show and acts as a feature as well. For example, if you have music playing or stopwatch on, you can click the dynamic island to turn it on, off, or more. The Pro models still feature ProMotion technology with an all new always-on display. It essentially allows the wallpaper of the iPhone to always show, even when turned off, with a dimmed screen, as seen in the photo below.

Always on display for iPhone 14 Pro. Credits to Apple.

All of these features are not available on the base iPhones which features the same display as last year, which is still very good. Overall, the new dynamic island and always on-display feature are very big, but not life-changing improvements from the base model.

Performance and Software

This is a category in which the base and Pro models are very similar. Though the Pro iPhones have the new A16 chip with 50% more bandwidth, both chips have the same amount of GPU and CPU cores. So basically, in lame terms, they are very similar and the differences will not be noticed by most. Both phones also contain a new feature called satelite connectivity. Basically, if the user is in a dangerous situation with no cellular data or wifi, than they can call for help using cell from satelites in emergency situations. This could be great for particularly adventurous people such as hikers.

New Base Model Sizes

This year, the base model iPhone comes with the regular 6.1 inch display size along with a new larger size. This size is called the iPhone 14 Plus and comes in at 6.7 inches, which is the same size as the Pro Max. The features of this size are all the same as the regular, but it means that some user may want a bigger size screen for a cheaper price than the Pro Max. Unfortunately, the mini size has been removed from the linup as sales were not as high as anticipated on the 13 and 12 mini. But, the new plus size provides a possible reason to upgrade.

IPhone 14 on left. IPhone 14 Plus on right. Credits to Apple.

Cameras

The base iPhones, as always, have a great dual-camera set-up with a 12mp and ultra-wide camera. It also has a great new auto-focus feature, also on the Pro models. So, overall the base models camera is great, as always. But the Pro, well its really for Professionals. It features the three camera set-up with the extra telephoto lense with an all new 48mp camera. This will allow for great detail with the camera. The camera also has 6x optical zoom compared to the base’s 2x optical zoom. Overall, the cameras are great for both iPhones but the Pro iPhones really do step up a lot in performance.

Conclusion

In the end both phones are amazing with great value for the money, but should you upgrade? If you currently use the base iPhone 12, or 13, then an upgrade to the new regular iPhone is not a great value for the money as they are all to similar, unless, you wish to upgrade to the new plus size. This is a much more affordable way to have a screen as big as the Pro Max for a much more affordable price. But, if you are looking to upgrade to a Pro from any of the last iPhones, than it definitly is of great value, especially if you are coming from a 12 Pro or under, even the 13 Pro. This is because the new camera is excellent and the dynamic island provides a brand new feature to the Pro iPhones.

Email

If you have any questions please email me at acharyapremoo@icloud.com, I will always try to answer!

Good Resource to Use for Comparison

Apple Product Comparison on their site

By Prem Acharya

With the introduction of the M1 chip into the cheaper iPad Air which has the same body, accessories, amount of ram, and now the same chip as its pro counterpart. It raises the question of if the 11' M1 iPad Pro is worth it anymore?

Photo of the new iPad Air. Credits to Apple.

The comparison below will be split into sections explaining the differences and similarities of the iPad Air and Pro. In the end, there will be advice for what iPad is right for a customer— not including the base iPad or the iPad mini. Also, the comparison will be with the M1 iPad Pro 11' and not the 12.9', but the only difference between the two is the bigger and better screen on the 12.9'.

M1 Chip

What is the M1 chip? The M1 chip was Apple’s first CPU created for their own computers, in 2020. The M1 chip was then added to the iPad Pro in 2021 which has made it more powerful than some of Apple’s base laptops and Macs. For example, the base iPad Pro and iPad Air have a more powerful chip than the base MacBook(same chip, but one more GPU core on the iPads). With more variants of the M1 chip coming out for new Macs, the M1 is still a very powerful chip that has changed the industry.

Specs, Differences, Similarities, and more.

For starters, the M1 iPad Air and the M1 iPad Pro inch have an almost identical body with the only differences being a larger camera on the backside of the Pro and more colors for the Air. Though the camera on the iPad Air is only a single camera, it is the same main camera as the Pro. But, the Pro does also feature a second 10 megapixel ultra-wide camera and a lidar scanner used for 3D scanning. For many, the cameras on the iPads are barely used, and even if they are important, the main cameras are the same on both, so the only reason to buy the Pro in terms of cameras, is for the Lidar 3D scanner.

Moving on, the screens on the two iPads are very similar, but contain the biggest and most important difference between the two iPads. Both devices have practically the same screen sizes with the Pro having an 11 inch screen, and the Air having a 10.9 inch screen because of slightly bigger bezels. The size of the screen between the two make virtually no difference in the end, but, the feature that will be talked about now does make the biggest difference. The iPad Pro has a 120 hertz ProMotion display while the iPad Air has 60 hertz display. Basically, the Pro’s display is much smoother when scrolling, playing games, and more. Though, the Air’s display experience is still fine, ProMotion does make the iPad Pro feel smoother. But, the screen on the iPad Air has the same amount of ‘hertz’ as all of screens of every apple product except the iPhone 13 Pro’s, MacBook Pro’s, and the of course the iPad Pro’s. So, the smoothness of the scrolling, and movement on the display will feel the same as all other Apple devices for the Air.

Apple iPad Pro 2021. Credit to Apple

Another big difference is that the Pro has Face ID while the Air has Touch ID on the top power button. This really comes down to what the user prefers as Face ID has benefits in areas such as more comfortable use, and the ability to use Animoji’s. But, the Touch ID on the Air may allow for easier use for little kids and more. This all comes down to personal preference as these benefits can go either way, except Animoji’s.

The next and last difference to talk about are the speaker systems. The iPad Air uses two speakers in the device, while the Pro use four speakers in the device. This does make the iPad Pro sound fuller, but the two speakers on the iPad Air still sound great as Apple is excellent in this field.

Some other differences is that the pro has faster download speeds through its port, more gigabytes on the more expensive models, more ram on the expensive models(which suprisingly doesn’t make much of a difference), and more.

Conclusion

But, in the end, the base Air is still a better value than the base Pro at $200 dollars less. So, this makes me recommend the Air to the general. The iPad Air is just such a good package at its price, as it provides the same performance as the Pro, as they have the same chip. The iPad Pro is still worth it for someone with money to waste or a specific need. But, unless you need to have the ProMotion, Lidar, or other specifics on the iPad Pro, the iPad Air is still the better value at its price.

Email

If you have any questions please email me at acharyapremoo@icloud.com, I will always try to answer!

Good Resource to Use

Apple Product Comparison on their site
